Inis Mor (IOR): there is a bus from the airstrip to Kilronan
Of the three Aran Islands, only Inis Mor has a bus service from its airstrip. It runs in line with the flight schedule and takes you into Kilronan, where everything else is.
- A regular bus runs from the island airport into Kilronan, and it operates in line with the flight schedule.
- That makes Inis Mor the easy one. Its two neighbours have no buses and no taxis at all.
- Kilronan is the main village: the harbour, the shops, the cafes, the bike rentals and the Ionad Arann visitor centre.
- The flight from Connemara is 8 to 10 minutes.
- Flights run 7 days a week all year, closed only 3 days of the year.
- Getting around the island: bike hire, walking trails, pony and trap, and minibus tours, all from Kilronan.
- Irish is the first language and English is widely spoken.
- Check in 45 minutes before departure at whichever end you are flying from.
- Hand luggage is 10 kg at 40x30x20 cm. Bikes and sports gear need arranging in advance.
- This is the island with Dun Aonghasa, the cliff fort, and the Seven Churches.
- Bring layers. The operator's own advice for all three islands is that the weather changes fast.
The bus
- Inis Mor has a regular bus service from its airport into the town, running in line with the flight schedule. Aer Arann Islands says so plainly in its FAQ.
- This is the difference between the three islands. Inis Meain and Inis Oirr have neither taxis nor buses; on Inis Mor a bus meets the flights.
- Kilronan is where it goes, and Kilronan is where the harbour, the shops, the cafes, the bike hire and the Ionad Arann visitor centre are.
Getting around afterwards
- Bike rental, walking trails, pony and trap tours and minibus tours all operate out of Kilronan.
- The island is the largest of the three, so unlike its neighbours it is not comfortably walkable end to end.
The flight
- 8 to 10 minutes from Connemara Airport.
- Multiple scheduled flights a day, seven days a week, all year, closed only three days of the year.
- A connecting bus runs from Galway City to Connemara Airport, booked online with your flight.
- Check in 45 minutes before departure. Flights are not held for late arrivals.
- Hand luggage is 10 kg, up to 40x30x20 cm; bikes, surfboards and diving gear need arranging in advance.
The island
- Irish is the first language here, and English is widely spoken.
- Dun Aonghasa, the stone fort on a 100 metre cliff, is the reason most people come.
- The Seven Churches, St Enda's Church and St Ciaran's Monastery are the other main sites.
- Weather changes quickly on the Atlantic edge. Comfortable shoes and layers, and some flexibility in winter.
