Getting from Kaunas Airport to the city

The payment trap

Kaunas is worth reading before you land because two Baltic airports handle money in opposite ways.

• On bus 29 the driver accepts cash only. No card, no contactless. Have coins or a small note ready, because change is not guaranteed.
• The on-board fare is EUR 1.50.
• The e-ticket through the app is EUR 0.70, and it permits a change of bus within 30 minutes of starting the journey.

Meanwhile, in Riga, the airport bus driver refuses cash entirely and takes bank cards only. Arriving in one having prepared for the other is how people end up walking.

The route

• Bus 29 runs from the sheltered stop about 40 metres from the terminal - turn left as you exit.
• Kaunas railway station is 40 to 50 minutes away; the city centre is roughly ten minutes closer.
• Kaunas is Lithuania's second city and a real destination, not just an alternative airport.

On to Vilnius

• Vilnius is about 100 km east and is where many Kaunas arrivals are actually going.
• The train from Kaunas station takes about an hour and is comfortable and cheap.
• Intercity coaches run the same route and are worth comparing on time of day.
• Factor the double transfer in. Airport bus, then train or coach, is a solid two hours to central Vilnius - and Vilnius has its own airport six kilometres from its old town.
