Marrakesh Menara Airport (RAK) to the city
Bus 19 costs 30 MAD and the ticket includes a free return within 15 days; taxis run on fixed fares you must agree before getting in.
- Bus 19 costs 30 MAD and the ticket includes your return journey, valid 15 days. Keep it - most visitors throw it away and pay twice.
- The fare is on the board at the airport bus stop. If someone quotes you something else, read the board.
- Taxis here are fixed-price, not metered. Agree the fare before you get in; there is no meter to fall back on.
- Expect roughly 100 to 150 MAD to the city, the medina or the railway station, with a higher night rate from about 21:00 in summer or 20:00 in winter until 06:00.
- The airport is only about 6 km from the medina, so no journey is long - the negotiation is the whole event.
Bus 19, and the half of the ticket people throw away
- 30 MAD, as displayed on the official fare board at the airport bus stop.
- The ticket includes a free return journey, valid for 15 days.
That second point is the one worth carrying away. Visitors routinely buy a single into town, discard the ticket, and buy another to come back - doubling a fare that was already paid.
- The bus runs to the medina and Jemaa el-Fnaa area and on around the city.
- It is the cheapest way in by a wide margin.
Taxis: fixed, and negotiated
Marrakesh does not run the airport taxi on a meter.
- The fare is agreed before the journey, and that is the system rather than a scam.
- Roughly 100 to 150 MAD to the city centre, the medina or the railway station.
- A night rate applies from about 21:00 in summer and 20:00 in winter until 06:00, commonly around 120 MAD and up for the same trip.
- Agree the number before you put your bag in the boot. Once your luggage is in, your negotiating position is gone.
- Have small notes. "No change" is a standard closing move.
Getting to the medina itself
- The medina is largely closed to cars. A taxi drops you at a gate, not at your riad.
- Most riads will send someone to meet you at the gate if you tell them your arrival time - take them up on it. The lanes are genuinely hard to navigate the first time, and this is the single most useful thing your accommodation can do for you.
- The airport is about 6 km out, so even a taxi is a short ride.
