Varna Airport (VAR) to the city and Golden Sands
A 60 minute ticket is 1.00 EUR and a 90 minute one 1.30 EUR, and Golden Sands takes 50 minutes, so the cheaper ticket does not cover the ride to the resorts.
A 60 minute paper ticket is 1.00 EUR, a 90 minute one 1.30 EUR and a day ticket valid until midnight 2.00 EUR.
Golden Sands is a 50 minute ride, so with a walk to the stop the 60 minute ticket is cutting it fine. Buy the 90.
The TTickets Varna app is much cheaper for time tickets: 0.51 EUR for 60 minutes and 0.77 EUR for 90. Its 24 hour day ticket is 2.05 EUR, slightly more than the paper one.
Bus 409 is the airport line.
Under 20 minutes to the city centre, 50 minutes to Golden Sands resort.
That direct resort connection is the point: no change in Varna needed.
You should not wait more than 15 minutes for a bus, and it departs from the bus station in front of Terminal 2 Arrivals.
Tickets are sold in the bus and from machines at the stops, and a machine ticket must be validated when you board.

Match the ticket to the ride. The city centre is under 20 minutes, so 60 minutes is ample. Golden Sands is 50 minutes and the 60 minute ticket leaves no margin at all.
The app halves the price of a time ticket, which is worth the download for a family. The day ticket is the one case where paper is marginally cheaper, though the app version runs a full 24 hours rather than expiring at midnight.
A ticket bought at a stop machine is valid from the moment it is issued and must be validated when you board and again at any transfer. A ticket bought in the vehicle only needs validating if you transfer.
Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, so euro is the price that counts; lev figures still shown alongside are the old ones.

Most arrivals at Varna are heading for the resorts, and the 409 runs straight there in the summer season.
A 50 minute bus at 1.30 EUR beats a transfer for a couple travelling light.
Departures at intervals of no more than 15 minutes, which is a proper urban frequency.
Practicalities
The stop is the bus station in front of Terminal 2 Arrivals.
The 409 also calls at the shopping centres, the bus station, the cathedral and the dolphinarium, so you can get off well before the end.
Real time arrival information is published by the city network for the stop.
