Drives on the
right

The driver sits on the left and overtakes on the left. Roundabouts turn anticlockwise.

Your licence
EU licence is enough

An EU, EEA or Swiss licence is valid as it stands. A licence from anywhere else works alongside an International Driving Permit, which hire desks and police expect to see.

Motorways
Free

There is no motorway charge for a car.

Monaco is two square kilometres of tunnels and multi-storey car parks, and driving in is easier than parking.

Two square kilometres, no tolls, and parking that is the entire problem.

  • Park in a public garage. Monaco's public car parks are plentiful, cheap by local standards and often free for the first hour; street parking effectively does not exist for visitors.
  • The road network is tunnels and ramps. Satellite navigation loses signal in them regularly, so check the exit before entering.
  • French rules apply either side, including the Crit'Air sticker for Nice and the wider region.
  • The alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l.
  • During the Grand Prix week in May the centre is closed to traffic entirely and the whole principality is walked.
