Buses cover the country; the trains are an afterthought.

Buses

  • The intercity bus network is the transport system. Skopje's main bus station sits under the railway station and serves the whole country.
  • Skopje to Ohrid takes about three hours and runs frequently.
  • Buses to Pristina, Sofia, Belgrade and Thessaloniki all leave from the same station.

Trains

  • The rail network is limited and slow.
  • The line to Bitola and the line towards Serbia exist but buses beat them on every measure.

Driving

  • The motorway corridors are good, the mountain roads slow.
  • A vignette is not used - motorway tolls are paid at booths.
  • Winter conditions in the mountains are serious.

Arriving by air?2

Each airport has its own page for the way into town - the operator, the fare and what still runs late.
