Dunedin (DUD): 30 km out, and the shuttle is a third of the taxi
The airport is well out of town on the Taieri Plain. A shared shuttle is around twenty dollars a head against a taxi in the seventies, and there is no city bus.
- The airport is at Momona, about 30 km south-west of central Dunedin.
- Allow about 20 minutes by car, 30 by taxi and around 35 by shared shuttle, up to 45 with several drop-offs.
- There is no public bus. Dunedin's city network does not reach Momona.
- Super Shuttle is the shuttle operator at the airport. Roughly NZD 20 for one passenger and NZD 30 for two, with discounts for groups.
- The shuttle is shared, so it stops for other people. That is the trade for the price.
- Dunedin Taxis and Urban Link work the rank outside the terminal.
- A taxi to the city starts around NZD 70. One operator, Preston, quotes a NZD 100 fixed rate each way.
- Rental cars are the common choice here, with Sixt, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Ezi, Hertz, Go and Thrifty at counters left of the main exit.
- Rental offices are staffed for flight arrivals and departures only, not around the clock.
- The first 15 minutes in the car park are free, and the drop-off zone is free for a quick drop.
Thirty kilometres, and no bus
- Momona is out on the Taieri Plain, which is why this is a 30 km transfer rather than a short hop.
- Dunedin's public bus network does not serve the airport. There is no cheap public option, so the choice is shuttle, taxi or car.

- Super Shuttle is the operator at the airport, on (09) 522 5100, with group discounts on top of the two-person rate.
- The shuttle is shared and drops off door to door, so a bad run can take 45 minutes. For one or two people it is still clearly the value option.
- Dunedin Taxis, on (03) 477 7777, and Urban Link, on (03) 471 9000, work the rank.
- Preston's published fixed rate is NZD 100 to and from the city. Knowing that number stops a surprise.
Renting
- This is a hire car airport for most visitors, because the Otago Peninsula, the Catlins and Central Otago are the reasons to be here and none of them has useful public transport.
- Sixt, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Ezi, Hertz, Go and Thrifty all have counters immediately left of the main exit.
- Offices are staffed for flight arrivals and departures. They are not open 24 hours, so a diverted or heavily delayed flight can leave you looking at a closed desk.
Parking and drop-offs
- The first 15 minutes in the car park are free.
- The drop-off zone is free for a quick drop, which is the one to use rather than the car park if someone is dropping you.
Onward
- Atomic Travel, Catch a Bus and InterCity run longer-distance coach services in the region, which is how you get to Queenstown or Christchurch without a car.
- Dunedin airport is small and quiet. Domestic flights dominate, with Air New Zealand and Jetstar carrying most of the traffic.
