Queenstown (ZQN): the bus will not take your card

Only cash or a Bee Card pays a bus fare to or from Queenstown Airport. Bank and credit cards are not accepted, which catches people who have just arrived with no New Zealand cash.

  • You can pay only with cash or a Bee Card on buses to and from the airport.
  • Bank and credit cards cannot be used to pay a bus fare here.
  • A Bee Card costs $5, plus a minimum $5 top-up on top of that.
  • A registered Bee Card gives the lowest fares.
  • Most services connect through the Frankton Bus Interchange, for Jacks Point, Arrowtown and the rest.

The payment rule

  • Only cash or a Bee Card may be used to pay a bus fare to or from Queenstown Airport. Bank and credit cards cannot be used at all.
  • That is the opposite of Christchurch, where a contactless bank card is the cheapest way to pay, and it is the single thing to know before you walk out of arrivals.
  • If you have no New Zealand cash and no Bee Card, you are taking a taxi.

The Bee Card

  • It costs $5, and you must load a minimum $5 top-up on top of the purchase price.
  • Registering it online gets you the lowest fares, and it works across Otago, so it is worth having if you are here for more than a couple of days.
  • You can buy one online before you travel, which is the version of this that goes smoothly.

Where the buses go

  • Most services connect through the Frankton Bus Interchange, a short ride from the airport, and from there to Jacks Point, Arrowtown and the surrounding areas.
  • Queenstown town centre is a few minutes away, and the airport sits in Frankton rather than in the town.

The context

  • This is a small airport with a very seasonal load. In ski season the queue for everything is longer, and the rental car you did not book is not available.
  • Arrivals here are often late in the day, because the approach is visual and weather-dependent. Have a plan that does not need a bus.
