What the spread is actually buying

  • Route 86 is the one everyone recommends, and at 50,000 dong it costs more than three times route 90, which runs to Kim Ma at 15,000.
  • What 86 buys is a seat, luggage space and a stop at Hanoi Railway Station, on the edge of the Old Quarter. What 90 buys is a city bus.
  • Kim Ma and Long Bien are both walkable-ish to the Old Quarter or one short taxi from it. If you are travelling light and it is daytime, 90 or 17 is the local answer.
  • With cases at 22:00, take 86 or a car.

The hours

  • Route 07 stops at 10:30 in the morning, which is a genuinely strange timetable and the reason it is not the answer for most arrivals.
  • Nothing runs much past 22:30. Noi Bai has a lot of late arrivals and they all leave by road.

The road

  • Noi Bai is about 25 km north of Hanoi, across the Nhat Tan bridge, and the drive is 40 minutes to an hour depending on the hour.
  • Agree the taxi fare or use a metered company. This is the airport where the fare conversation is most worth having before you get in.
