Bus 152 costs 5,000 VND and bus 109 costs 15,000 VND into the centre; the airport is only about 7 km out.

The airport is about 7 km from District 1 - inside the city, which is why the bus is a genuine option rather than an endurance test.
Bus 152 is 5,000 VND, roughly twenty US cents, running via Ben Thanh.
Bus 109 is 15,000 VND, a more comfortable coach-style service to the Pham Ngu Lao backpacker area, roughly every 40 to 45 minutes from about 05:30 to 22:00.
Bus 109's route changed when the new Terminal 3 opened - check which terminal your stop is at rather than trusting an older map.
Grab is what residents use and is cheap enough that the fare difference rarely decides it; pick-up is from a designated zone, not the kerb.

Tan Son Nhat is one of the few major airports genuinely inside its city, which makes the cheap options usable.

Bus 109 runs about every 40 to 45 minutes, roughly 05:30 to 22:00, and is the more comfortable of the two with space for luggage.
Bus 152 is an ordinary city bus and correspondingly basic - fine with a backpack, awkward with suitcases.
Bus 109's route was changed to serve the new Terminal 3. Published route maps predating that are wrong about where it stops.

Grab is the default in Vietnam and is what residents use for exactly this trip.
Pick-up is from a designated zone, signposted from arrivals - not from the kerb outside the doors.
The app price is the price, which removes the whole negotiation.
At Vietnamese prices the difference between Grab and the bus is small in absolute terms; the bus wins on principle rather than on much money.

Use the official ranks and the metered companies - Vinasun and Mai Linh are the names residents trust.
Insist on the meter.
Ignore anyone who approaches you inside the terminal.

Terminal 3 opened recently and handles a large share of domestic flights.
Check your terminal before travelling, and allow time to move between them - they are not adjacent.
