Cairns (CNS): there is no public bus, only shuttles
TransLink confirms no scheduled bus serves Cairns Airport. Travel to the city and Palm Cove is by private shuttle booked with the operator.
- No Translink bus route serves Cairns Airport. The state transport authority says so itself.
- Its own network data confirms it: none of the 463 stops in the Cairns Sunbus network is at the airport.
- The 22 Sunbus routes all run from the city to the northern beaches, the western suburbs or the southern corridor, and none of them turns into the airport.
- What exists is private shuttles, to the city and to Palm Cove, booked directly with the operator.
- The airport handles the shuttle stops and tickets, not Translink, so the airport's own site is where the current operators are listed.
- The airport is only about 7 km north of the city centre, so a taxi or ride-hail is short and not expensive.
- For Port Douglas, 65 km north, book a coach in advance. That is a proper transfer, not a taxi ride.
- Most visitors here hire a car, because the reef ports, the Atherton Tablelands and Cape Tribulation all need one.
The honest answer
- There is no public bus to Cairns Airport. TransLink, the Queensland transport authority, lists airport services for Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Townsville and Mackay, and for Cairns says only that private shuttles run to the city and Palm Cove.
- Its own timetable data backs that up. The Cairns Sunbus feed has 463 stops and none of them is at the airport; the 22 routes are all city-to-suburb.
- This surprises people because Cairns is a major tourist airport and the terminal is barely 7 km from the Esplanade.
What to do instead
- Book a shuttle. Several operators run scheduled shuttles from the terminal to city hotels and up the coast to Palm Cove. Bookings are made with the operator, and the airport publishes who is currently running.
- Take a taxi or a ride-hail. The distance is short. This is the default for most arrivals.
- For Port Douglas, 65 km north, book a coach transfer in advance. There is no turn-up-and-go option.
- Hire a car if you are doing the Tablelands, the Daintree or Cape Tribulation. Cairns is a driving base.
The airport
- Cairns Airport has two terminals, T1 international and T2 domestic, a short walk apart.
- It is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the busiest airport in northern Australia.
- Queensland does not use daylight saving, so from October to April Cairns is an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne despite being on the same side of the country.
