Getting from Sydney Airport to the city

The fee

Sydney's airport line is privately built, and the fee is how it is paid for.

• About AUD 17.92 per adult, charged on top of the ordinary Opal fare, at Domestic and International stations.
• Excluded from the daily and weekly travel caps. Sydney's caps are generous and this sits outside them entirely.
• Charged per person, and on contactless bank cards as well as Opal - there is no card that avoids it.
• It has its own separate weekly cap, which matters if you use the airport repeatedly and not at all on a single trip.

For one traveller into the centre, the surcharge is several times the fare it is added to.

The way round it

This is well known to residents and almost never explained to visitors.

• Take the T8 line to Mascot, the first station outside the airport boundary. No access fee applies there.
• From Mascot, bus 420 runs to the terminals in about 10 to 15 minutes, on an ordinary fare with your Opal or contactless card.
• Coming from the airport, do it in reverse: bus 420 to Mascot, then the train.
• It costs a fraction and takes maybe 20 minutes longer. With luggage and a group it is a large saving; alone and in a hurry, pay the fee.

Everything else

• The train reaches Central in about 13 minutes and Circular Quay a few minutes more - it is genuinely fast.
• Route 420 and other buses serve the airport directly from parts of the city, at ordinary fares.
• Taxis and ride-hailing carry an airport access charge of their own, which is disclosed and modest by comparison.
