Bajio (BJX): Uber cannot collect you here

Ride-hailing is not permitted inside the airport, so it is the shuttle, a taxi, or a pre-booked transfer. The shuttle to Guanajuato is 45 pesos and runs every half hour.

  • Ubers are not allowed inside Guanajuato airport. You would have to leave the grounds on foot to use one, which is not practical.
  • The shuttle to Guanajuato city runs every 30 minutes from 06:00 to 23:00, costs 45 pesos a person and takes about 45 minutes with stops.
  • Guanajuato city is about 30 km away, a 28 minute drive without stops.
  • San Miguel de Allende is about 1.5 hours by road, roughly 90 km.
  • There is no direct public bus to Guanajuato city. The bus route means changing at Silao.
  • Reaching San Miguel by bus means going via the central terminal and takes about 2 hours.
  • Pre-booked private transfers start around USD 54 a car to Guanajuato and USD 79 to San Miguel de Allende.
  • Taxis outside the terminal are a negotiation. Agree the price before you get in.
  • For San Miguel, a shared shuttle costs almost as much as a private transfer, so the private car usually wins.
  • This is the airport for León, Guanajuato, Irapuato and San Miguel de Allende, none of which is next door.

The Uber problem

  • Ride-hailing is not permitted inside the airport. That single rule shapes every arrival here, because the app that would normally solve the price question is unavailable at the kerb.
  • The alternatives are the shuttle, a taxi you negotiate, or a transfer you booked before you flew.

The shuttle

  • To Guanajuato city, every 30 minutes from 06:00 to 23:00, 45 pesos a person, about 45 minutes with several stops.
  • That is by far the cheapest sensible option and it runs late enough for most evening arrivals.
  • For San Miguel de Allende the shuttle pricing is close to a private transfer, so the private car is usually the better buy.

  • None of these is a five minute hop. BJX is a regional airport serving several cities, and the transfer is a real leg of the journey.

Buses, honestly

  • There is no direct bus to Guanajuato city. The route requires changing at Silao.
  • San Miguel means going through the central terminal and takes about two hours in total.
  • Primera Plus runs the intercity coaches from León, which is the network you would join.

Private transfers

  • Pre-booked cars start around USD 54 to Guanajuato and USD 79 to San Miguel de Allende.
  • For two or more people heading to San Miguel that is the practical answer, and it removes the negotiation at a kerb where Uber cannot help you.

Taxis

  • Taxis outside the terminal can be haggled with, which is another way of saying there is no fixed rate.
  • A taxi to Guanajuato centre is quoted around 480 to 500 pesos by one traveller account, which puts San Miguel at several times that.
