Getting from Helsinki Airport to the city

The loop

Helsinki's airport sits on the Ring Rail Line, which is exactly what it sounds like: a loop out of the city, round through the airport, and back.

• The P train and the I train run the same circle in opposite directions.
• Both terminate at Helsinki Central.
• P takes about 28 minutes, I about 33.

This is the thing worth knowing before you stand on the platform. Arriving passengers routinely assume one of the two is going the wrong way and wait for the other. Take whichever comes first; the difference is five minutes.

The fare

• EUR 4.40 for the airport to the centre, bought in the HSL app or on an HSL card. Fares rose on 1 January 2026.
• Tapping a contactless bank card costs a little more than the app fare, which is the price of not installing anything.
• You need an ABC ticket. The airport is in zone C, the centre in zone A. A city AB ticket does not cover the airport, and that is the one mistake to avoid.
• Tap a contactless card at the reader, or buy in the HSL app.
• No airport supplement - Finland charges it as an ordinary zone journey.

Practicalities

• The station is beneath Terminal 2. Terminal 1 connects by an indoor walkway, which matters in a Finnish winter.
• Trains run roughly every 10 minutes during the day and continue late.
• For Tampere, Turku and the rest of Finland, the airport station is not on the long-distance network - go to Helsinki Central and change there.
