Izmir (ADB): finding the IZBAN station, and the four ESHOT buses
The IZBAN suburban train serves the airport, reached differently from each floor. ESHOT routes 200, 202, 204 and 206 cover the city.
- IZBAN, the Izmir suburban railway, has a station at the airport. This is the fast way into the city.
- From Domestic Departures: leave the exit and continue diagonally to the left, in the opposite direction to the exit flow.
- From Domestic Arrivals: use the lifts and escalators located in the opposite direction to the exit.
- From International Arrivals: follow the "Metro-IZBAN" signs and take the moving walkway.
- ESHOT municipal buses run routes 200, 202, 204 and 206 from the airport.
- 200 goes to Mavisehir; 202 to Alsancak Cumhuriyet Avenue; 204 to Izotas at Bornova (metro and coach station); 206 to Sirinyer Transfer Center.
- Public transport in Izmir runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Buy an IZMIRIM card at the IZBAN booth, open 07:00 to 14:40 and 15:00 to 22:40, seven days a week.
- Havas shuttles run to the city centre, to Kusadasi and to Aydin.
The train, and how to find it
- Izmir Adnan Menderes has an IZBAN station, part of the city's suburban rail network, and it is the reason this airport is easier than most Turkish airports.
- The route to it depends on which floor you are on, and the airport spells it out:
- Domestic Departures floor: from the exit, continue diagonally to the left, heading in the opposite direction to everyone leaving.
- Domestic Arrivals floor: use the lifts and escalators in the opposite direction to the exit.
- International Arrivals floor: follow the "Metro-IZBAN" signs and take the moving walkway.
Buying a ticket
- You need an IZMIRIM card for public transport in Izmir, and it is sold at the IZBAN booth at the airport.
- The booth is open 07:00 to 14:40 and 15:00 to 22:40, seven days a week. Note the gap in the middle of the afternoon.
- Izmir's public transport runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which is unusual and useful.
The buses
- ESHOT, the metropolitan municipality's bus operator, runs four routes from the airport.
- 200: Mavisehir - Airport, along the northern waterfront.
- 202: Alsancak Cumhuriyet Avenue - Airport, into the heart of the seafront district.
- 204: Izotas (Bornova, the metro and the intercity coach station) - Airport.
- 206: Sirinyer Transfer Center - Airport.
- 204 is the one for onward coaches, because Izotas is where the intercity buses leave from.
The coaches
- Havas runs airport shuttles to the Izmir city centre, and also out to Kusadasi and Aydin.
- Those two matter more than they look. Kusadasi is the port for Ephesus and the Greek islands, and a great many arrivals at ADB are heading straight there rather than into Izmir.
Where you are
- The airport is about 18 km south of central Izmir, on the road towards Selcuk and Ephesus.
- Izmir is Turkey's third city and a Mediterranean port with a long waterfront promenade rather than a historic old town.
- Ephesus is 80 km south, and Kusadasi 95 km. Both are reachable from here without going into Izmir first.
