Metro line 3 reaches Syntagma in about 40 minutes for EUR 9, but it closes around midnight - the X95 bus runs 24 hours for less.

The metro charges a dedicated airport fare of about EUR 9 one way, roughly EUR 16 return. This is not the ordinary Athens fare; the airport is priced separately.
The metro does not run all night. Airport trains run from 06:10 to a last departure at 23:34, every 36 minutes - so a late arrival cannot use it.
The X95 bus runs 24 hours for EUR 5.50, direct to Syntagma. It is slower and it is the answer for every flight outside metro hours.
Syntagma is the interchange for metro lines 2 and 3 and is the square most central hotels are measured from.
The taxi flat fare rises at night. Athens sets fixed airport fares with a higher night rate between 00:00 and 05:00.

Line 3 (blue) runs from the airport station to Syntagma in about 40 minutes, or Monastiraki a few minutes further.

The fare is about EUR 9 one way and EUR 16 return. Athens prices the airport separately from the rest of the network, so the ordinary city ticket does not apply and a travelcard usually does not either.
Airport trains run every 36 minutes - a long headway by metro standards, so check the departure before you settle in.
The line closes around midnight, with the last train from the airport at 23:34 and the first at 06:10.

That last point is what catches people. A great many flights into Athens land after midnight, and the metro is simply not an option for them.

Slower - reckon on an hour or more depending on traffic, and Athens traffic is a real variable.
It is the default for a night arrival, and knowing it exists is worth more than the fare difference.

Agree the fixed fare before setting off and expect a receipt.
Use the official rank. Anyone approaching you inside the terminal is not the taxi service.
