Kavala (KVA): the airport is at Chrysoupoli, 30 km from Kavala

The airport sits near Chrysoupoli, about 30 km east of Kavala. Its own page describes the connection as a transfer from the Chrysoupoli KTEL station rather than a direct service.

  • The airport is about 30 km east of Kavala, near the town of Chrysoupoli. It is not on the edge of the city.
  • The airport's own page describes the connection to Kavala as available "via transfer from the KTEL station of Chrysoupoli". It does not describe a direct airport bus.
  • From Chrysoupoli KTEL station you can also travel to Xanthi.
  • Tickets are bought from the bus driver.
  • A second source describes KTEL buses running between the airport and Kavala central bus station, about 30 to 40 minutes, usually 5 to 7 euro, with schedules often coordinated to flights.
  • The two descriptions do not quite agree. Check with KTEL Kavala before assuming a through service.
  • Confirm with the operator at ktelkavalas.gr.
  • This airport is the gateway to Thassos, reached by ferry from Kavala port or from Keramoti.
  • Keramoti is the closer ferry port to the airport, and is reached by car or by local KTEL buses.
  • It also serves Xanthi and Drama, and the wider Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region.
  • The airport information desk is +30 25910 53400.
  • The runway is 3,000 m and the terminal is small: car hire desks, a cafe, duty free and ATMs.

It is not in Kavala

  • The airport is about 30 km east of the city, near Chrysoupoli.
  • That distance is the single most important thing about arriving here. A guide that treats it as a city airport is misleading you by half an hour.

The bus, and two accounts of it

  • The airport's own page says: "Connection to Kavala is available via transfer from the KTEL station of Chrysoupoli." It describes a transfer, not a direct airport service, and adds that from Chrysoupoli you can also reach Xanthi. Tickets are bought from the driver.
  • A travel publisher describes it differently: KTEL buses running between the airport and Kavala's central bus station, about 30 to 40 minutes, usually 5 to 7 euro, with schedules often coordinated with flight times.
  • Both may be true at different times of year, but they are not the same journey. Check the current position with KTEL Kavala at ktelkavalas.gr before you land.

Where people are actually going

  • Thassos. Ferries sail from Kavala's passenger port and from Keramoti, and Keramoti is the closer of the two to the airport. Keramoti is reached by car or by local KTEL buses.
  • Xanthi and Drama, both served from Chrysoupoli or Kavala.
  • Kavala itself, whose old town and harbour are the reason most visitors stop there at all.

The airport

  • Named "Megas Alexandros", Alexander the Great.
  • Single 3,000 m runway, small terminal, with car hire desks, a cafe, a duty free shop and ATMs.
  • Information desk: +30 25910 53400.
