Getting from Calicut International Airport to the city

A restriction that has outlasted three reasons for it

• Wide-body operations at Karipur were stopped in May 2015 while the runway was re-carpeted. The re-carpeting finished; the aircraft did not come back, because the regulator kept citing safety.
• After Air India Express flight 1344 overran the runway on 7 August 2020, killing twenty-one people, the DGCA reinstated the restriction outright.
• Six years on it is still in force. The runway is 2,700 metres, the shortest in Kerala, with a 240 metre runway end safety area, and it is a tabletop: the ground falls away at both ends.

The work that would lift it has slipped again

• Extending the runway end safety area is the piece of work that would let big jets return. It was expected to be complete by March 2026 and was not.
• Because of that, the 2027 Hajj tender from Kozhikode was finalised without wide-body aircraft. Pilgrims flying from Karipur will do so on narrow-bodies for another season, even though authorities suggest the safety work may finish before flights start.
• Hajj operations from India begin on 8 April 2027. In Kerala the embarkation points are Kozhikode, Kochi and Kannur; the 20 day short package runs from ten Indian airports only, and Kochi is the sole Kerala one.

What this means when you book

• Every scheduled service here, Gulf sectors included, is a narrow-body. If a booking engine offers you a wide-body on a Kozhikode route, check the airport code: it is almost certainly Kochi (COK) or Kannur (CNN).
• The Airports Authority of India proposed a 3,500 metre runway in 2017. That plan is not built.

Which district you have actually landed in

• Karipur is in Malappuram district, by Kondotty, and serves Kozhikode from outside it. That matters for taxis, for local police jurisdiction and for anyone matching an address to a district.
• The Kozhikode district administration puts the airport around 23 km from Kozhikode town. The Malappuram district administration puts it 26 km from Malappuram. Travel publishers usually say 25 to 28 km to Kozhikode. Two government pages disagree with each other, so plan on 23 to 28 km and on a journey time that depends entirely on traffic through Ramanattukara.
• The same two pages give two different airport telephone numbers: 0483 271 9491 on the Malappuram page and +91 483 2712762 on the Kozhikode page.
• The postal address is Calicut Airport P.O, Padinharathara, Malappuram district, Karipur, Kerala 673647.

Nobody publishes a fare, and that is the answer

• The Airports Authority of India operates this airport, and its domains refuse traffic from outside India, so there is no operator page to quote. The state bus corporation publishes no airport tariff either.
• So there is no published airport fare to Kozhikode. Do not accept a figure from a booking aggregator as though it were official. Fix the price before you get in, or insist on the meter.
• Kozhikode district's own guidance is one sentence: passengers can take local vehicles into the city. That is the whole of the public-transport advice the state gives for this airport.
• For buses, ring the depots rather than trusting a printed timetable: Kozhikode KSRTC 0495 2390350, Malappuram KSRTC 0483 2734950.

Ride-hailing

• Uber's own list of Indian cities includes both Kozhikode and Kondotty, the town at the airport gate. Coverage therefore exists on both sides of the district boundary.
• Uber publishes no airport page for CCJ. For Albuquerque, El Paso, Tucson and Palm Springs it does. Treat that as a sign there is no signed, managed pickup zone here and agree a meeting point with the driver.

Rail

• The nearest railway station is Kozhikode, code CLT, on 0495 2702606 or 0495 2701234. It is in the city, not at the airport, so it is a destination rather than a connection.
