Chandigarh (IXC): the airport is in Mohali, and the CTU bus runs every 15 minutes

Officially Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, physically in Punjab rather than Chandigarh, and served by air-conditioned city buses to the sector terminals every fifteen to twenty minutes.

  • The airport's official name is Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport.
  • It is in Mohali, in Punjab, about 12 to 14 km from the Sector 17 bus stand in Chandigarh.
  • Chandigarh Transport Undertaking runs air-conditioned buses to the Sector 17 and Sector 43 terminals, every 15 to 20 minutes.
  • The first bus leaves ISBT Sector 17 at about 04:30 and the first from the airport at about 05:30.
  • CTU bus fares are roughly 25 to 50 rupees.
  • The journey is about 30 minutes.
  • Prepaid taxis, auto-rickshaws, Ola and Uber all work from outside the terminal.
  • Panchkula, in Haryana, is only a few kilometres away, which is why this airport serves three cities in three different states.
  • Two terminals: Terminal 1 mostly domestic, Terminal 2 for international operations, with 4 aerobridges and 48 check-in counters.
  • IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet run most of the schedule, with international services to Dubai and Sharjah.

Three cities, three states, one airport

  • The airport is physically in Mohali, in Punjab. Chandigarh is a union territory, and Panchkula, a few kilometres the other way, is in Haryana.
  • That tricity geography is why the road access and the bus routes matter. Which city you are staying in changes the transfer completely.
  • Sector 17 in Chandigarh is the usual reference point, about 12 to 14 km away.

The bus

  • Chandigarh Transport Undertaking runs air-conditioned services between the airport and the Sector 17 and Sector 43 bus terminals.
  • Every 15 to 20 minutes, which is frequent enough to turn up for.
  • The first departure from ISBT Sector 17 is about 04:30 and the first from the airport about 05:30, covering the early flights.
  • Roughly 25 to 50 rupees.
  • About 30 minutes depending on traffic.

The alternatives

  • Prepaid taxis at a counter, which fixes the fare.
  • Auto-rickshaws from the stand near the taxi rank.
  • Ola and Uber both operate and give a fixed price in the app, with door to door service across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula.

The terminal

  • Terminal 1 handles mostly domestic flights, Terminal 2 the international operation.
  • 4 aerobridges, 48 check-in counters, escalators and lifts, with dining and retail.
  • A modern glass and steel building with arrivals and departures separated.

The flights

  • IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet dominate the domestic network.
  • International services run to Dubai and Sharjah.
  • This is the airport for Himachal and the hills. Shimla is a few hours by road, and a great deal of the traffic is people heading north rather than into Chandigarh itself.
