Kolkata (CCU): the buses stop at Airport Gate No. 1
A dozen WBTC air-conditioned routes call at Airport Gate No. 1. AC-40 starts there and runs to Howrah Station.
- The bus stops are called Airport Gate No. 1 and Airport Gate No. 3, and that is literally what they are: gates on the perimeter road, not the terminal kerb.
- Twelve WBTC air-conditioned routes call there: AC-2, AC-23A, AC-37, AC-38, AC-40, AC-50A, C23, C31, C42, C43, C48 and D1A.
- AC-40 begins at Airport Gate No. 1 and runs to Howrah Station via Kaikhali, Baguihati, Laketown, Ultadanga, Manicktala, MG Road, Lalbazar, Esplanade and BBD Bag.
- AC-2 runs Barasat to Howrah Station through the airport gate, covering much of the same corridor.
- For Salt Lake and Sector V, the New Town tech district, use C42, C43, C48 or AC-38.
- AC-37 and AC-50A run south through Science City and the EM Bypass to Ruby and Garia.
- Several routes continue north to Madhyamgram, Barasat and Hridaypur, which is useful if you are not going into the city at all.
- Allow for the walk from the terminal to the gate, with luggage, in Kolkata's heat.
Read the stop name literally
- Kolkata's airport buses do not stop at the terminal. They stop at Airport Gate No. 1 and Airport Gate No. 3, which are gates on the road that runs past the airport.
- That is the single thing to know before planning on a bus here. You will be walking out of the terminal and along to a gate, with your bags, in the heat.
The routes
- AC-40 is the one that starts at the airport. Airport Gate No. 1 to Howrah Station, via Kaikhali, Baguihati, Laketown, Ultadanga, Kankurgachi, Manicktala, Girish Park, MG Road, Lalbazar, Esplanade East and BBD Bag.
- AC-2 runs the length of it the other way, Barasat to Howrah Station, through the airport gate, Birati, Kaikhali, Teghoria, Kestopur, Dum Dum Park, Laketown, Ultadanga and into the centre.
- AC-37 and AC-50A head south instead: VIP Road, HUDCO, Chingrighata, Science City, the EM Bypass, Ruby and on to Garia and Patuli.
- C42, C43, C48 and AC-38 serve Salt Lake Sector V and New Town, the tech district, via Chinar Park and Eco Park.
- AC-23A and C31 run west to Dakshineswar and Bally.
Which one you want
- Howrah Station: AC-40 or AC-2.
- Salt Lake or New Town offices: AC-38, C42, C43 or C48.
- South Kolkata, Garia, Jadavpur: AC-37, AC-50A or D1A.
- North, to Barasat or Madhyamgram: AC-2, AC-37, C43 or C48.
The airport
- Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International is at Dum Dum, about 15 km north-east of central Kolkata.
- Everyone calls it Dum Dum airport, and taxi drivers will understand that better than the full name.
- The prepaid taxi counter in arrivals is the standard alternative to the bus, and it fixes the fare before you get in.
