Pekanbaru (PKU): no airport bus, but the city is fifteen minutes away

There is no dedicated airport bus. Trans Metro Pekanbaru stops on the airport road for 4,000 to 5,000 rupiah, and a taxi is 60,000 to 100,000.

  • The airport sits inside Pekanbaru, and the centre is 15 to 25 minutes away.
  • There is no dedicated airport bus.
  • Trans Metro Pekanbaru buses stop on Jalan Bandara SSK II, a five to ten minute walk from the terminal.
  • A TMP fare is 4,000 to 5,000 rupiah, which is as cheap as it gets.
  • An official taxi is 60,000 to 100,000 rupiah, from the arrivals area.
  • GrabCar or GoCar is 35,000 to 70,000 rupiah.
  • A motorbike taxi, GoRide or GrabBike, is 15,000 to 30,000, for anyone travelling light.
  • A DAMRI shuttle to the Bandar Raya Payung Sekaki terminal is reported at about 15,000 rupiah, every 30 minutes.
  • The city has been working with the airport operator to bring TMP properly into the terminal, linking it to the Sungai Duku river port as well.
  • In rush hour the 15 to 25 minute journey becomes 25 to 40.

A close airport with an awkward gap

  • Sultan Syarif Kasim II is inside Pekanbaru, and the centre is 15 to 25 minutes away by road.
  • What it does not have is a bus that comes to the terminal.
  • Trans Metro Pekanbaru, the city BRT, stops out on Jalan Bandara SSK II, five to ten minutes' walk from the doors.
  • A TMP ride is 4,000 to 5,000 rupiah. For a short walk that is a very large saving on a taxi.
  • The city transport department has been working with the airport operator to improve this, with the aim of linking the airport to the Sungai Duku river port and the Bandar Raya Payung Sekaki bus terminal. Check whether the bus now comes in properly before assuming the walk.

What a car costs

  • Official taxi: 60,000 to 100,000 rupiah, from the arrivals area.
  • GrabCar or GoCar: 35,000 to 70,000 rupiah.
  • GrabBike or GoRide: 15,000 to 30,000 rupiah, if you can carry your bag on a motorbike.
  • A pre booked private transfer is 120,000 to 180,000 rupiah.

The DAMRI

  • A DAMRI shuttle runs to the Bandar Raya Payung Sekaki terminal, reported at about 15,000 rupiah every 30 minutes.
  • That terminal is the long distance bus station, so it is the connection for the rest of Riau rather than for the city centre.

Timing

  • Normal traffic: 15 to 25 minutes into the centre.
  • Rush hour: 25 to 40 minutes.
  • Neither is long, which is the main reason this airport is easy despite the missing bus.
