Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) to the city

The airport is 45 km out in Kulon Progo. The train reaches Tugu station in about 40 minutes for 20,000 rupiah; the bus takes up to two hours.

This airport replaced Adisutjipto, which is much closer to the city but too small and now takes almost no scheduled flights.

The YIA Xpress, with reserved seats and fewer stops, is about 55,000 rupiah and 35 minutes.
Trains run once or twice an hour, at 30 to 50 minute intervals.
The DAMRI bus costs a flat 80,000 rupiah and takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
Traffic around Gamping is the usual reason the bus is slow.
The first bus is at 04:00 and departures run almost hourly to 21:00.
A Grab or Gojek car is from 250,000 rupiah and an airport taxi 300,000 to 400,000, and still takes at least 1.5 hours.

The airport station is at the terminal and trains run to Yogyakarta Tugu station, in the centre.
The journey is about 40 minutes.

This is both the fastest and the cheapest way in, which settles the argument. Every road option is slower and dearer.

The delay is congestion around Gamping, on the western approach to the city, which the railway bypasses.
DAMRI runs from 04:00, almost hourly until 21:00, and SatelQu runs a similar service.
A Grab or Gojek car starts around 250,000 rupiah and an official airport taxi is 300,000 to 400,000, and neither is any faster than the bus in traffic.

Adisutjipto, close to the city on the eastern side, was Yogyakarta's airport for decades.
It was too small and its runway too short, and scheduled traffic moved to YIA.
Older guides and older booking confirmations may say Adisutjipto or use the code JOG. Check which airport your ticket names; they are 50 km apart.

Borobudur is roughly north east of the airport and can be reached without going into Yogyakarta at all, which saves a good deal of time.
Prambanan is on the far side of the city, so that one does mean crossing Yogyakarta.
