Belem (BEL): look for Aeroporto on the front of the bus
There is no dedicated airport bus, but several city routes pass it along Almirante Barroso Avenue. Otherwise it is a prepaid taxi counter or Uber and 99.
- The airport is about 12 km from the centre of Belém.
- A taxi or app ride takes 20 to 30 minutes without heavy traffic; a bus takes 40 to 60.
- There is no dedicated airport bus. Several city routes run along the major avenues past the airport.
- Look for buses marked Aeroporto, or those following Almirante Barroso Avenue, which is the main road in.
- Buses cost a few reais and get crowded at peak.
- Official taxi counters with prepaid fixed rates operate in the terminal. Use them rather than the kerb.
- Uber and 99 both work in Belém. 99 is the Brazilian app and is often cheaper.
- One main passenger terminal handles domestic and international with a single layout.
- Free wifi, charging points, restaurants, shops, currency exchange, medical posts and VIP lounges.
- There is a panoramic terrace with runway views, which is a pleasant way to spend a delay.
The bus, and how to find it
- Belém has no airport express. What it has is a set of ordinary city routes that pass the airport along the major avenues.
- Two ways to identify the right one: the destination board says Aeroporto, or the route runs along Almirante Barroso Avenue, which is the artery between the airport and the centre.
- 40 to 60 minutes and a few reais.
- They get crowded at peak and are not built for luggage, which is the usual caveat.
The alternatives
- Official taxi counters with prepaid fixed rates are in the terminal. Paying at the counter fixes the price before you meet the driver.
- Uber and 99 both operate. 99 is the Brazilian app and frequently undercuts Uber here.
- 20 to 30 minutes by car in normal traffic.

The flights
- LATAM, GOL, Azul and Turkish Airlines are the carriers here.
- Belém is the mouth of the Amazon and the gateway to Marajó island and the Ilha do Combu, as well as a serious food city in its own right.
- It is also where the Círio de Nazaré happens in October, one of the largest religious processions in the world, when the city fills completely and flights and hotels go early.
