Galeao (GIG) by BRT, and the change for the metro
Two BRT stations serve the terminals. The TransCarioca lines run to Barra da Tijuca and Madureira, and pass Vicente de Carvalho, where you join Metro Line 2.
- The airport has two BRT stations: Estacao Galeao - Tom Jobim 1 and 2.
- They run every day, on the TransCarioca Parador lines.
- One direction is Terminal Alvorada in Barra da Tijuca; the other is Madureira station.
- Both pass Vicente de Carvalho, where you can join Metro Line 2.
- There is no metro station at the airport. The BRT plus one change is the rail route.
Two BRT stations, no metro
- RIOgaleao has two BRT stations of its own, Estacao Galeao - Tom Jobim 1 and Tom Jobim 2, serving the terminals and operating every day.
- There is no metro station at the airport, and this is the fact that trips people up: Rio has a metro, and it does not come here.
The TransCarioca
- The TransCarioca Parador BRT lines connect the airport with Terminal Alvorada, in Barra da Tijuca, and with Madureira station.
- Both pass through Vicente de Carvalho, where the BRT integrates with Metro Line 2.
- So the rail journey into Copacabana or the centre is: BRT to Vicente de Carvalho, Line 2 onward. One change, and it works, but it is not a direct train.
With luggage, honestly
- BRT vehicles are city buses on a busway. They are fine with a rucksack and awkward with two suitcases at rush hour.
- The airport is on Governador island, in the north, and the beaches are in the south. That crossing is the whole journey and it takes an hour by any means.
- Metered taxis and ride-hailing serve the terminals and are what most visitors use.
Two airports again
- Santos Dumont (SDU) is Rio's city airport, on the bay by the centre, used for the Sao Paulo shuttle and other domestic routes.
- Galeao is the international one. They are 20 km apart and connected by nothing quick.
