Recife (REC): the metro walkway, and what it does not cover

A 500 m covered walkway leads to Aeroporto station on the south line. The metro does not run on Sundays and does not reach the Boa Viagem seafront.

  • Aeroporto station is on the Linha Sul of the Recife metro.
  • A covered pedestrian walkway of about 500 m links the terminal to the station.
  • The platform is by the Praca Ministro Salgado Filho, in front of the airport.
  • The fare is flat, with no distance charging, reported at 3.70 to 4.25 reais depending on the source and the year.
  • The metro runs Monday to Saturday, 05:00 to 23:00.
  • There is no Sunday service. That is the fact that catches people out.
  • Recife station, the central hub, is 30 to 35 minutes away.
  • Allow 35 to 45 minutes door to door with the walkway.
  • The line does not reach the Boa Viagem seafront. Antonio Falcao, Shopping and Tancredo Neves serve inland Boa Viagem.
  • Most seafront hotels need a taxi or a bus from the nearest station.

The walkway

  • The airport does not have a station in the building, but it comes close: a covered pedestrian walkway of about 500 m leads to Aeroporto station on the Linha Sul.
  • The platform is by the Praca Ministro Salgado Filho, directly in front of the airport.
  • Five hundred metres under cover with luggage is manageable, and it is what makes Recife one of the easier Brazilian airports to leave.

The metro

  • The fare is flat with no distance charging. Published figures range from 3.70 to 4.25 reais depending on the year quoted, so carry five.
  • Recife station, the central hub where every line starts, is 30 to 35 minutes away.
  • Door to door, including the walkway, allow 35 to 45 minutes.

The two catches

  • The metro runs Monday to Saturday only, 05:00 to 23:00. There is no Sunday service at all. A Sunday arrival means a taxi or an app car, and a great many leisure flights land on Sundays.
  • The line does not serve the Boa Viagem seafront. Antonio Falcao, Shopping and Tancredo Neves cover inland Boa Viagem, but the beachfront hotels are a further ride from any of them.

So, when to use it

  • Going to the centre, Recife Antigo or Olinda on a weekday: take the metro.
  • Going to a Boa Viagem beach hotel, or arriving on a Sunday: take a car. The airport is close to Boa Viagem by road, and the fare is small.
