Campinas Viracopos (VCP): which city you are actually going to
Viracopos is 82 km from Sao Paulo and 20 from Campinas. Coaches run to both, operated by six different companies, and there is no train.
- The airport is 82 km northwest of Sao Paulo and 20 km southwest of central Campinas.
- Low cost carriers sell it as Sao Paulo. It is an hour and a half from the city on a good day.
- There is no railway. A rail link was in Infraero's 2009 plan and was never built.
- Six operators run buses here: LiraBus, Onibus Azul, VB Transportes, Bonavita, Rapido Campinas and EMTU.
- VB Transportes runs the executive line to Terminal Tiete in Sao Paulo.
- LiraBus runs between the airport and the Barra Funda terminal, and to Campinas, Valinhos and Vinhedo.
- Six lines run into Campinas, including from the central terminal.
- Lines 601 and 738 VP1 serve Indaiatuba, and separate lines run to Jundiai and Vinhedo.
- Fares are not published in one place. Each operator sets and sells its own.
- The airport sits beside the Bandeirantes and Anhanguera highways, which is what makes the coach the sensible way in.
Which city
- Viracopos is 82 km northwest of Sao Paulo and 20 km southwest of central Campinas.
- Airlines sell it as a Sao Paulo airport, and for a low fare it often is worth it, but the transfer is a real journey rather than a hop.
- If Campinas is your destination, this is genuinely convenient. If Sao Paulo is, budget an hour and a half each way and check it against the price of flying into Guarulhos.
There is no train
- Infraero's 2009 plan for the airport included a new rail route alongside a new runway and terminal.
- It was never built, for legal and bureaucratic reasons.
- Everything to and from this airport goes by road.
The coaches
- Six operators serve the airport: LiraBus, Onibus Azul, VB Transportes, Bonavita, Rapido Campinas and EMTU.
- To Sao Paulo: VB Transportes runs an executive line to Terminal Tiete, and LiraBus runs to the Barra Funda terminal. Both of those are metro interchanges, which is what makes them useful.
- To Campinas: six lines, run by Bonavita and VB Transportes, including services from the central terminal and various neighbourhoods.
- To Indaiatuba: lines 601 and 738 VP1.
- To Jundiai and Vinhedo: executive and regional lines.
Buying a ticket
- There is no single fare table. Each operator prices its own service and sells its own tickets, and the numbers move.
- Check the operator's own channel for the line you want rather than relying on a general figure.
- Allow for the Bandeirantes on a Friday evening, which is when this road is at its worst.
