Belfast City (BHD): Sydenham halt has a footbridge and not much else
The railway halt beside the airport is unstaffed. There is a ticket machine and audio announcements, and that is close to the whole list. The Bangor platform is reached by footbridge with no lift, which matters with luggage.
- The nearest station is Sydenham halt, on Inverary Drive, BT4 1. It is a halt, not a staffed station.
- It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and stays open overnight.
- There is a ticket vending machine but no ticket desk. No low level desk and no hearing loop either.
- There are no departure screens and no timetable information posted. Audio announcements are the only live information.
- No public toilets and no accessible toilets.
- No indoor seating. There is sheltered outdoor seating.
- No car parking and no cycle parking at the halt.
- A ramp serves the Belfast direction platform. The Bangor direction platform is reached by footbridge only, with no lift.
- There is a ramp for train access, so boarding the train itself is provided for even though the crossing is not.
- No ATM, no shops, no refreshments, no WiFi and no luggage storage.
- Translink airport buses serve Belfast City from towns and cities across Northern Ireland, with tickets bought online.
- A Translink ticket vending machine sits at the bus stop at the airport, and another at Belfast Grand Central Station.
The halt is the thing to plan around
- Belfast City Airport sits beside Sydenham halt on the Belfast to Bangor line, address Inverary Drive, Belfast BT4 1. That proximity is the airport's great advantage over Belfast International, and it comes with a catch.
- Sydenham is a halt, not a station. Translink's own facilities list is mostly the word No: no ticket desk, no departure screens, no posted timetable information, no toilets, no indoor seating, no ATM, no shops, no refreshments, no WiFi and no luggage storage. There is a ticket vending machine, audio announcements and sheltered outdoor seating.
- It is open 24/7 and remains open overnight, which is genuinely useful for an early flight, but there is nothing there to wait in.
The footbridge
- The Belfast direction platform has a ramp. The Bangor direction platform is reachable by footbridge only, and there is no lift.
- That is the single most important thing to know here. If you are heading towards Bangor, or arriving on a Bangor-bound train and crossing, you will be carrying your luggage up and over steps.
- A ramp is available for getting on and off the train itself, so the aircraft-to-carriage part is provided for; the crossing between platforms is not.
- If steps are a problem, plan a taxi or a bus instead of the train in that direction, and do it before you arrive rather than at the foot of the bridge.
Buses and tickets
- Translink runs airport services to Belfast City Airport from towns and cities across Northern Ireland. Tickets are available online through the journey planner, which is also where the fare options appear.
- Ticket vending machines are at Belfast Grand Central Station and at the bus stop at Belfast City Airport itself, so you can buy on arrival without cash or an app.
- Note that the Airlink add-on ticket is for Belfast International, service 109A, not for Belfast City. The two Belfast airports have separate arrangements and it is easy to read advice meant for the other one.
