Land's End (LEQ): the Penzance transfer must be booked 24 hours ahead
The only public link between Penzance railway station and the airport is a Skybus transfer bus that carries pre-booked, pre-paid passengers only. Turn up on the day and it will not take you.
- The airport transfer bus runs between Penzance railway station and the terminal and takes about 20 minutes.
- It carries only passengers who booked and paid no later than 24 hours before the departure date. Skybus says this in those words.
- Book it with your flight, or add it later by calling passenger relations. There is no on-the-day purchase.
- The transfer leaves roughly an hour before the flight window it serves. A 10:00 to 10:59 departure is met by the 09:00 transfer.
- Two car parks sit right next to the terminal, open for every Skybus departure and arrival, with five EV charging points.
- Parking can be pre-booked, though the airport says there is plenty for all passengers.
- The flight to St Mary's takes 20 minutes on a 19 seat DHC-6 Twin Otter, and runs all year.
- Dogs are allowed on the Land's End route. They are not allowed on the Exeter route.
- Hold luggage is two pieces, 15 kg combined per person, maximum 75 x 50 x 30 cm, and no single bag over 20 kg even when sharing.
- Cabin baggage is one bag of 3 kg, no bigger than 30 x 15 x 15 cm, plus a coat, small camera, binoculars and something to read.
- Day trip tickets include no hold luggage allowance at all.
- Excess is charged at 6 pounds per kilo and travels only if there is space. Call Skybus operations on 01736 785233 in advance.
The transfer is the part people get wrong
- Land's End Airport is on the moor near St Just, not in Penzance, and the train does not go there.
- Skybus runs a scheduled transfer bus from Penzance railway station, about 20 minutes, timed to the flights. That is the public transport answer.
- The catch is in the operator's own wording: the service is available only to passengers who have pre-booked and paid no later than 24 hours before your departure date. It is not a bus you can flag down.
- Book it at the same time as the flight, or telephone passenger relations to add it afterwards. Leaving it to the morning is too late.
- The published summer pattern departs on the hour, an hour or so ahead of the flight band it serves: 09:00 for departures between 10:00 and 10:59, 12:00 for 13:00 to 13:59, and so on to 16:00 for the last band.
Driving instead
- There are two car parks immediately next to the terminal, and they are open to serve every Skybus departure and arrival, so an early flight is not a problem.
- Five EV charging points are on site.
- Parking can be pre-booked, which is worth doing in August even though Skybus says there is room for everyone.
The flight itself, and what you can carry
- Twenty minutes to St Mary's in a 19 seat DHC-6 Twin Otter, all year round. Newquay is 30 minutes and Exeter an hour if the weather closes Land's End.
- Dogs travel on the Land's End and Newquay routes but not from Exeter.
- The luggage allowance is small and strictly stated: two hold pieces totalling 15 kg, one cabin bag of 3 kg at 30 x 15 x 15 cm. Passengers travelling together may pool the hold allowance, but no single bag may exceed 20 kg.
- A day trip ticket carries no hold allowance. Plan for hand baggage only.
- Excess costs 6 pounds per kilo, moves on a space available basis, and has to be arranged in advance on 01736 785233. If it flies unaccompanied, VAT is added.
