Tingwall (LWK): book the taxi to Lerwick by 4pm the day before, or walk

Shetland Islands Council runs a Dial-A-Ride taxi between Tingwall Airport and the Viking Bus Station in Lerwick for every flight, but it only runs if it was booked by 16:00 the previous day.

  • A Dial-A-Ride taxi links every flight with the Viking Bus Station in Lerwick. That is the public transport answer here.
  • It must be booked by 4pm the previous day, on 01595 745745. Unbooked, it does not run.
  • For Sunday and Monday journeys, book by the Friday before. ZetTrans applies that rule across the dial-a-ride network.
  • Tingwall is not Sumburgh. Sumburgh (LSI) takes the flights from mainland Scotland; Tingwall handles the inter-island services.
  • Shetland Islands Council holds the CAA licence and operates the airport.
  • Airtask Group flies the services under contract, to Fair Isle and Foula.
  • Book flights on 01595 840246 or lwk.ops@airtask.com. There are separate summer and winter timetables.
  • Tingwall is Prior Permission Required for all arriving aircraft, with requests at least 24 hours ahead to the Duty AFISO.
  • The Duty AFISO is on 01595 744481 in office hours and 07766 421058 out of hours.
  • The surrounding area is a Flight Restriction Zone. Flying a drone inside it without permission is illegal.
  • Airtask also runs Shetland's only scenic flights, up to seven passengers.
  • Public holiday patterns differ across Shetland transport, including Up Helly Aa in Lerwick, and some days have no service at all.

The taxi is the catch

  • Tingwall sits in the valley north-west of Lerwick and there is no scheduled bus into the terminal.
  • Instead, a Dial-A-Ride taxi transport link operates between Tingwall Airport and the Viking Bus Station in Lerwick for each flight. That is the council's own description.
  • It has to be booked by 4pm the previous day on 01595 745745. Dial-a-ride services in Shetland only run when a booking exists, so an unbooked passenger has no link at all.
  • ZetTrans adds the weekend rule: journeys on Sunday or Monday must be booked by the Friday before.
  • Public holidays change everything. Bus, ferry and air services run different patterns, and on some days there is no service. Shetland's public holidays include 1 and 2 January, 25 and 26 December, and Lerwick Up Helly Aa, the Wednesday after the last Tuesday in January.

What Tingwall is for

  • Shetland Islands Council is licensed by the CAA to operate Tingwall, and provides the inter-island air services under contract with Airtask Group.
  • The destinations are the outer isles, Fair Isle and Foula. Flights to and from mainland Scotland use Sumburgh (LSI) at the southern tip of the mainland, which is a different airport altogether and about 40 minutes' drive from Lerwick in the other direction.
  • Book flights on 01595 840246 or lwk.ops@airtask.com. Timetables run in summer and winter seasons and are published by Airtask.
  • Airtask also operates the only scenic flights in Shetland, for up to seven passengers.

If you are flying yourself in

  • Tingwall is PPR only. Requests must be submitted a minimum of 24 hours in advance, by phoning the Duty AFISO or emailing a completed PPR form.
  • Duty AFISO: 01595 744481 in office hours, 07766 421058 out of hours, or dutyfisotingwall@shetland.gov.uk.
  • The area around the airport is a Flight Restriction Zone. Flying any drone inside it without permission from air traffic control, or from the airport when ATC is not operating, is illegal. A permission request form goes to the Duty AFISO.
