Newcastle Airport (NCL) to the city and Sunderland
The Tyne and Wear Metro serves the airport directly, and since April 2026 no single journey on it costs more than 2.50 GBP.
- The Metro station is at the airport, on the Green line.
- 2.50 GBP maximum for a single, any distance, when you pay with a Pop pay as you go card. The day cap is 5.00 GBP.
- Around 25 minutes to the city centre: Haymarket, Monument or Central Station.
- Paper tickets from the machine cost 1.00 to 2.60 GBP more than the same journey on Pop, so get the card.
- Sunderland is 55 to 60 minutes on the same line, without a change, and still inside the 2.50 GBP cap.
- Under-21s pay 1.00 GBP flat, frozen until 2027.
The Metro
- Newcastle is one of the few British airports with a metro at the terminal, rather than a shuttle to a station.
- Twenty five minutes to the three city centre stops, Haymarket, Monument and Central Station.
- Trains run through the day, roughly every 12 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays and every 15 in the evenings and on Sundays.
What it costs
The airport used to be the expensive end of the Metro, because the fare was zonal and the airport is three zones out. That ended on 1 April 2026, when the North East Mayor's Fares came in.
- 2.50 GBP is the most an adult single can cost, no matter how many zones you cross, paying with Pop Pay As You Go.
- 5.00 GBP is the daily cap on the same card.
- 1.00 GBP for anyone up to 21, frozen until 2027.
- Shorter hops cost less than the cap.
The catch is the payment method. The cap applies to Pop PAYG, not to paper tickets from the machine, and Nexus puts the difference at 1.00 to 2.60 GBP a ticket. Buying a paper single at the airport is the most expensive way to make this journey.
Beyond Newcastle
- Sunderland is on the same line, 55 to 60 minutes from the airport with no change, and the fare is still capped at 2.50 GBP.
- Central Station is the connection for the East Coast Main Line, which puts Edinburgh and London within a single onward ticket.
