Pisa Airport (PSA) to Pisa and Florence
The PisaMover reaches Pisa Centrale in five minutes for EUR 6.50; Florence is a further hour by train.
- Florence has its own airport. Florence Peretola (FLR) is on a tram line into the city. Pisa is about 85 km away and needs a shuttle and a train.
- The PisaMover reaches Pisa Centrale in about five minutes. It is the only link between the terminal and the railway network, so there is nothing cheaper to weigh it against.
- A return costs exactly twice a single - EUR 6.50 one way, EUR 13.00 return - so the return ticket buys you nothing but one less queue.
- Florence is about an hour from Pisa Centrale by train, with more than fifty services a day, so a total of roughly 1 hour 30 from the terminal door.
- Pisa itself is genuinely close - the leaning tower is a short bus or twenty-minute walk from Pisa Centrale, which makes this one of the easier Italian airports if Pisa is where you are going.
Where the airport actually is
Galileo Galilei Airport is on the edge of Pisa, which is unusual and useful: this is a city airport, not a field an hour away. What makes it a candidate for this list is how often it is sold and booked as Florence, which is about 85 km east and has an airport of its own, Peretola (FLR).
The PisaMover
The link to the railway network is the PisaMover, an automated shuttle running between the terminal and Pisa Centrale station in about five minutes, with one stop on the way at the San Giusto/Aurelia car park.
- Single: EUR 6.50. Return: EUR 13.00. The return is the single doubled, so buy whichever suits you.
- It runs 06:00 to midnight every day of the year, and to 01:00 from June to September.
- Buy at the ticket machines at each station entrance, or from a Trenitalia ticket office together with your rail ticket. A ticket bought on its own is valid 30 days; you show it at the turnstile.
It is expensive for five minutes, and there is no cheaper alternative worth the walk with luggage.
On to Florence
From Pisa Centrale, trains to Florence Santa Maria Novella take about an hour, with more than fifty departures a day. Adding the shuttle, the change and the wait, plan on an hour and a half from stepping off the aircraft to arriving in Florence, and rather more at the end of the day when the regional services thin out.
If Florence is the whole point of the trip, compare the total cost of Pisa plus the PisaMover plus two rail tickets against a direct fare into FLR before you decide the cheap flight was cheap.
