Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA) to Rome

The Ciampino Airlink combines a bus and a regional train to Termini for EUR 2.70, less than half the coach fare.

  • The cheapest way into Rome is EUR 2.70, and it is also among the quickest: the Ciampino Airlink is a 10-minute bus to Ciampino station plus a regional train to Roma Termini, 33 to 39 minutes door to door.
  • The Airlink bus leaves from stop 6, in the square directly outside the terminal. Buy the ticket in the Trenitalia app, at a machine or in a shop.
  • The Airlink does not cover the metro or a city bus at the far end. That is a separate ticket once you are at Termini.
  • The direct coach is EUR 6.00 one way, EUR 12.00 return with Terravision, about 40 to 45 minutes, roughly every 40 minutes.
  • The taxi has a fixed fare of EUR 40.00 per vehicle to any address inside the Aurelian Walls, all supplements included, at any hour. Outside the walls the meter runs instead.

Where the airport actually is

Ciampino is about 15 km southeast of Rome - the near airport, not the far one. Rome's main gateway is Fiumicino (FCO), which has its own express train and a different fixed taxi fare.

The Airlink, and why it is the answer

Trenitalia and the bus operator ATRAL sell one ticket, the Ciampino Airlink, at EUR 2.70: EUR 1.20 for the airport bus and EUR 1.50 for the regional train. The bus goes from stop 6 in the square outside arrivals to Ciampino railway station in about ten minutes; the train from there reaches Roma Termini in a little over twenty. Total 33 to 39 minutes.

One limit worth knowing before you land: the ticket is not valid on Rome's metro or city buses. It gets you to Termini and no further.

The coach

Terravision runs the direct coach to Termini for EUR 6.00 one way and EUR 12.00 return, calling at Ciampino town on the way, in 40 to 45 minutes, roughly every 40 minutes. Luggage is included whatever it weighs, and the ticket stays valid for 12 months and can be used on any departure on the day you booked, seats permitting. It is the simpler option with big bags; it is not the faster one.

Taxis

Rome's mobility authority sets a fixed fare of EUR 40.00 per vehicle between Ciampino and any address inside the Aurelian Walls, and it is explicit that the figure is all-inclusive of supplements - it cannot be raised for luggage, for the hour or for traffic. The published journey time is about 30 minutes.

Other fixed fares from Ciampino: Tiburtina station EUR 40.00, Ostiense station EUR 40.00, Fiumicino Airport EUR 55.00. If your hotel is outside the walls, the flat rate does not apply and the meter starts at the airport. Any driver quoting something other than these numbers for these destinations is overcharging you.
