Getting from Rome Fiumicino Airport to the city

Two trains, one station

The airport station is inside the terminal complex, and two completely different services leave it.

• The FL1 does not call at Termini. This is the single thing to know at Fiumicino: the cheaper train is not a slower version of the expensive one, it is a different route across the south and east of the city.
• If your hotel is near Termini, the 6 EUR you save on the FL1 goes straight back out on a metro ride and a change with luggage.
• If you are staying in Trastevere or near Ostiense, the FL1 is both cheaper and closer, and the Leonardo Express would be the wrong choice at twice the price.

The details that save money

• Leonardo Express runs every 15 minutes and is non-stop, so there is nothing to plan.
• Four tickets bought in one transaction cost 40 EUR rather than 56 EUR on the Mini-groups fare - worth knowing before four people queue separately.
• Large luggage carries no surcharge, and children under 12 travel free with a paying adult.
• FL1 runs every 15 minutes on working days and every 30 minutes on Sundays and public holidays, reaching Roma Tiburtina in 48 minutes.

Taxis

• The fare is fixed at 55.00 EUR per vehicle between the airport and anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, and the city sets it.
• It is all-inclusive. Supplements for luggage, night hours or holidays are already in the figure, so a driver adding them is overcharging.
• Per vehicle, not per person - which makes it reasonable for three or four people with bags and poor value for one.
• Ciampino's equivalent fare is 40.00 EUR, set the same way.
• Use the official white taxi rank. Anyone approaching you inside the terminal offering a ride is not working from the rank.

Getting the geography right

• Fiumicino is about 30 km southwest of Rome, on the coast. It is not a short hop, which is why the train exists and why the fixed taxi fare is what it is.
• Terminals are connected, and the station serves the complex rather than one terminal.
