Fukuoka (FUK): the subway stops at the wrong terminal
Fukuoka Airport Station is at the domestic terminal, five minutes from Hakata. For the international terminal you get off there and take a free shuttle bus, about ten minutes more.
- The subway reaches the domestic terminal in about 5 minutes from Hakata Station.
- Fukuoka Airport Station is in the domestic terminal building, not the international one.
- For international, get off there and take the free shuttle bus.
- The shuttle takes about 10 minutes and costs nothing.
- Add that leg both ways. An international departure from central Fukuoka is 15 minutes, not 5.
The famous five minutes, with a footnote
- Fukuoka's subway reaches the airport in about 5 minutes from Hakata Station, which is genuinely remarkable and is the thing everybody repeats about this airport.
- What gets left off is which terminal. Fukuoka Airport Station is in the domestic terminal building.
- Passengers for the international terminal get off there and take the free shuttle bus, which takes about 10 minutes.
So plan fifteen, not five
- Central Fukuoka to an international departure is a subway ride plus a bus ride.
- The shuttle is free, so this costs time rather than money, but it is time you have to have allowed for.
- Coming the other way it is the same in reverse: land international, ride the shuttle to the domestic terminal, then take the subway.
Why the airport is like this
- Fukuoka Airport is built almost inside the city, on the site of the old Itazuke air base, with the domestic and international terminals on opposite sides of the runway. That is why the two are a bus ride apart despite sharing an airfield.
- The proximity is the trade. No other major Japanese city puts its airport two subway stops from the main station.
