Getting from Ibaraki Airport to the city

The buses

• Connection buses run from JR Ishioka station, JR Mito station, Tsukuba station on the Tsukuba Express, and JR Tokyo station.
• The Tokyo Station service is the one that matters for visitors: it makes Ibaraki usable as a budget gateway to the capital region.
• The airport publishes separate bus information pages for the Mito, Ishioka, Tsukuba and Tokyo directions.

The money

• Parking is free, with 3600 spaces, for any length of stay. That is unusual anywhere.
• A running campaign makes the one way access bus fare free from Mito station, Tsukuba Center and Ishioka station, for airport users who stay at least one night in accommodation within Ibaraki prefecture.
• Shared taxis run on advance booking and cost considerably less than a private taxi.

The airport

• It opened in 2010 on the Hyakuri air base, which it shares with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
• It is in Omitama city, in central Ibaraki prefecture, about 80 km from central Tokyo.
• Its traffic is dominated by low cost carriers, domestic and to China and Taiwan.

Getting around the region

• Mito is the prefectural capital, known for Kairakuen, one of Japan's three great gardens.
• Tsukuba is the science city, on its own express line from Akihabara.
• Kashima and the coast are south-east, and the airport publishes road information for that direction too.
