Kansai Airport (KIX) to Osaka
Nankai runs two trains to Namba from the same platform level: the Airport Express in about 45 minutes, and the Limited Express Rapi:t in 34 for 520 yen more. A Rapi:t bought online in advance is 1,410 yen all in.
- The Rapi:t reaches Namba in 34 minutes at best, running at up to 120 km/h with every seat reserved.
- The Airport Express takes about 45 minutes and needs no supplement at all.
- The gap between them is 520 yen. That is what the upgrade to the Rapi:t costs on top of the ordinary fare.
- Bought in advance as a Rapi:t Digital Ticket it is 1,410 yen for an adult, fare and express charge together, and 710 yen for a child.
- A Super Seat is 1,590 yen for an adult and 910 for a child, in cars 5 and 6, three seats a row rather than four.
- Every Rapi:t seat is reserved, so you buy at the counter or on your phone rather than just walking on.
- There is luggage space by every door as well as overhead compartments, which is not true of every Japanese commuter train.
- For Wakayama, change at Izumisano to the Limited Express Southern, about 40 minutes.
Two trains, one decision
- Nankai runs both services from Kansai Airport Station, which sits between the terminal buildings on the airport island.
- The Airport Express is the ordinary train. About 45 minutes to Namba, no reservation, no supplement.
- The Limited Express Rapi:t is the fast one. A minimum of 34 minutes to Namba, top speed 120 km/h, all seats reserved.
- The difference in time is about eleven minutes. The difference in price is 520 yen. Whether that is worth it depends mostly on how much luggage you have and whether you want a guaranteed seat.
What the Rapi:t costs
- 520 yen is the upgrade, on top of whatever the ordinary fare would have been.
- The Rapi:t Digital Ticket bundles both into 1,410 yen for an adult in a regular seat and 710 yen for a child, bought on a phone before you travel.
- A Super Seat is 1,590 yen adult, 910 yen child. Cars 5 and 6 have three seats a row instead of four, 485 mm wide and reclining to 1,200 mm.
- The digital ticket comes with a shopping and restaurant coupon for Namba City, Namba Parks and Namba SkyO, redeemable at the information desks on the day of use.
Buying it
- Rapi:t seats are all reserved, so there is a counter step: the Nankai Ticket Office at Kansai Airport Station, or the ticket machines.
- If you bought online or through an agent abroad, join the left-hand queue at the limited express counter; if you are buying on the spot, the right-hand one.
- The Airport Express needs none of this. Buy an ordinary ticket, or tap an IC card, and get on.
Luggage
- The Rapi:t has storage space near each door for large cases, plus overhead compartments at every seat.
- The Airport Express is a commuter train with the luggage arrangements of one, which is the other argument for the 520 yen.
Beyond Osaka
- Wakayama is a change at Izumisano onto the Limited Express Southern, about 40 minutes.
- Kyoto is JR's territory rather than Nankai's, served by the Haruka limited express from the same station complex. Its fare is not quoted here because we could not verify it from JR West's own pages.
