Kushiro (KUH): fifty minutes to the station, twenty five to the marsh

- New Chitose is about 55 minutes by air, or about four and a half hours by road.
- Tancho in the name means the red-crowned crane, which winters in the marshes here.

- Asahikawa: about 7 hours 5 by bus, about 5 hours 45 by road.
- Hakodate: about 1 hour 35 by air. Wakkanai: about 1 hour 55 by air.
Why the airport is where it is
- Kushiro Marsh is Japan's largest wetland, and it lies between the airport and the city.
- The tancho, the red-crowned crane, winters here, which is what the airport is named for.
- The airport is the gateway to eastern Hokkaido, for Akan, Mashu and Shiretoko.
Practical note
- Buses run to Kushiro station timed to flights, and hire cars are the norm for anyone touring the national parks.
- Fog is a recurring problem on this coast in summer, and diversions happen.
