Getting from Sendai Airport to the city

The railway

• Sendai Airport Transit, a dedicated railway company, runs the Sendai Airport Access Line into the terminal.
• Its stations are, in order: Sendai, Nagamachi, Taishido, Minami-Sendai, Natori, Morisekinoshita, Mitazono, Sendai Airport.
• Natori is where the line meets the JR network. Trains run through to Sendai station rather than terminating.
• Sendai station is a Tohoku Shinkansen stop, so from the terminal you are one ride from the bullet train to Tokyo, Morioka or Aomori.
• This is one of the better airport rail links in regional Japan, and it is the default way into the city.

The bus to Yamagata

• Yamako Bus, the Yamagata Kotsu group operator, runs a Yamagata to Sendai Airport line.
• The published timetable shows four scheduled calls between 07:50 and 17:00, so it is a small number of daily trips, not a frequent service.
• The point of it is avoiding a change in Sendai when you are heading across the prefectural border.
• Yamagata is on the other side of the Ou mountains, roughly an hour and a half away.

Orientation

• The airport is in Natori, a city south of Sendai, on the coast.
• The terminal was rebuilt after the 2011 tsunami, which reached the airport buildings.
• Sendai is the largest city in Tohoku, and the airport serves the whole of the northern Honshu region.
