Getting from Toyama Airport to the city

The two bus options

• Toyama Chiho Railway, the local operator known as Chitetsu, runs the buses.
• The Yatsuo line via Toyama Airport, the sports park and Naruko is the regular route: about 245 scheduled calls, 06:33 to 19:21. Its route 36 variants run to Toyama station via the city hospital.
• A direct airport bus runs separately: about 16 scheduled calls, 06:34 to 20:35, headsigned simply for Toyama Airport and Toyama station.
• If you want to get into the city quickly, take the direct bus. The Yatsuo line takes a longer path.

The stops

• Toyama Airport, about 570 metres from the runway reference point.
• Sogo Taiiku Center mae, the sports centre, about 500 metres.
• Akigashima guchi, Nishi Araya and Toyama Sangyo Tenjikan guchi, all within about 900 metres.

The airport itself

• It is built on the riverbed of the Jinzu river, on land between the flood banks, which is unusual anywhere in the world.
• That gives it a long narrow site and limits what can be built there.

The competition

• Toyama station is on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, roughly two hours from Tokyo.
• That has taken most of the Tokyo air traffic, and the airport now leans on international and other domestic routes.
• Toyama is the base for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, which is why many visitors arrive here at all.
