Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) to Tokyo
The monorail reaches Hamamatsucho in about 13 minutes for around 520 yen, a fifth of what Narita costs.
- Haneda is about 14 km from central Tokyo - inside the city, not an hour outside it.
- The Tokyo Monorail reaches Hamamatsucho in about 13 minutes for roughly 520 yen with an IC card.
- Hamamatsucho is on the Yamanote line, the loop that connects nearly everything in Tokyo, so one change reaches most destinations.
- The Keikyu line is the alternative, running to Shinagawa and through to the Asakusa subway line - better if you are heading south or east.
- Compare with Narita before booking a flight. Narita costs about 2,580 yen and takes 40 minutes on its cheaper fast train; the difference is an hour and 2,000 yen each way.
The monorail
Haneda's advantage over Narita is not marginal - it is the difference between an airport in the city and one an hour outside it.

- Hamamatsucho is on the Yamanote line, Tokyo's central loop - Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno and Ikebukuro are all one ride from there.
- Trains are frequent throughout the day and run late.
The Keikyu line
- Keikyu Airport Line runs from the same terminals to Shinagawa in about 15 minutes, at a comparable fare.
- It continues onto the Toei Asakusa subway line, so for Asakusa, Nihonbashi or destinations east it saves a change.
- Choose by destination, not by price - the two are close enough that where you are staying should decide it.
IC cards
- Use Suica or Pasmo. Tap in and out; both work on the monorail, Keikyu, the subway, JR and most buses in Japan.
- Mobile Suica works on an iPhone or a Japanese Android and can be topped up with a foreign card in Apple Wallet - the simplest option for a visitor.
- Physical card supply has been intermittent in recent years; the mobile version avoids the question.
Haneda runs late
Haneda handles a growing share of international flights, including overnight arrivals. The monorail and Keikyu do not run all night, so a 03:00 landing still means a taxi or a wait in the terminal - which, this being Japan, is a comfortable place to spend three hours.
