Yamaguchi Ube (UBJ): Kusae station, and how to pay on an unstaffed line
Route buses run to Shin-Yamaguchi and Ube-Shinkawa, shuttles to Shimonoseki and Nagato. Kusae station is nearest, and you pay on board, not at a window.
- Route buses run in two directions: towards Shin-Yamaguchi station and towards Ube-Shinkawa station.
- Shin-Yamaguchi is the Sanyo Shinkansen station, which is the connection that matters.
- Airport shuttle buses run towards Shimonoseki station and Nagato-shi station.
- Kusae is the nearest railway station to the airport.
- No tickets are sold at Kusae. Take a numbered slip from the machine on board and pay on the train or at the destination barrier.
- At unstaffed stations only the front car's doors open. Board by the rear door of the front car and get off by the front door.
- Shared taxis run by advance booking: Isamuya Daiichi Kotsu on 083-902-0897 towards Yamaguchi, from 5000 yen.
- Hagi Kintetsu Taxi on 0838-22-0924 runs towards Hagi, from 4000 yen, two round trips a day.
The buses
- Route buses run two ways from the airport: towards Shin-Yamaguchi station and towards Ube-Shinkawa station.
- Shin-Yamaguchi is a Sanyo Shinkansen stop, so that is the direction for onward travel to Hiroshima, Hakata or Osaka.
- Airport shuttle buses run towards Shimonoseki station and Nagato-shi station.
- The airport warns that bus timetables change when the flight schedule changes, so check the dates on the published timetable.
The train, and how to pay
- Kusae is the nearest station to the airport.
- No tickets are sold at Kusae. Take a numbered slip from the machine inside the train, then pay either on board or at the barrier where you get off.
- At unstaffed stations only the front carriage's doors open. Board through the rear door of the front carriage and alight through the front door.
- This trips up visitors constantly on rural Japanese lines, and the airport spells it out for that reason.
Shared taxis, booked in advance
- Towards Yamaguchi city: Isamuya Daiichi Kotsu, 083-902-0897. Say you want the shared taxi. From 5000 yen.
- Towards Hagi: Hagi Kintetsu Taxi, 0838-22-0924. From 4000 yen, running two round trips a day.
- Both require booking ahead, so arrange them before you fly rather than on arrival.
The region
- Hagi is the old castle town on the Sea of Japan coast, a UNESCO industrial heritage site.
- Shimonoseki is at the western tip of Honshu, at the strait facing Kyushu.
- Yamaguchi city itself is inland, and is sometimes called the Kyoto of the west.
