Baltrum (BMR): the plane exists because the ferry is tidal
Baltrum is car-free and its ferry depends on the tide. Both island operators fly here by reservation, with ten kilos of baggage and no walk-up seats.
- Ostfriesland Tourismus lists OFD as flying Baltrum, alongside Wangerooge, Langeoog and Norderney.
- FLN Frisia runs day trips to Baltrum from Norden-Norddeich, which is the closest mainland airfield.
- Every FLN flight must be reserved in advance. There is no walk-up.
- Be at the airfield at least 15 minutes before the agreed time or your seat may be resold.
- Check-in only happens together with handing over your baggage.
- Baggage is 10 kg free per adult, 5 kg for children up to 11, nothing over 20 kg per piece, and carriage subject to space.
- Baltrum is the smallest inhabited East Frisian island and is entirely car-free.
- The ferry to Baltrum is strongly tide-dependent. Ostfriesland Tourismus notes that some of these islands can be reached by sea only once a day.
- That is what the aircraft is for. It is not a luxury here.
- Some shipping lines sell a Verbundkarte letting you fly one way and sail the other.
- The nearest international airport is Bremen.
Why fly to an island this small
- Baltrum is the smallest inhabited East Frisian island, car-free, and its ferry depends on the tide.
- Ostfriesland Tourismus states the general case directly: some of these islands can be reached by ferry only once a day because of the tides, which makes the aircraft a real alternative rather than an indulgence.
- Some shipping lines sell a Verbundkarte combining a flight one way with the ferry the other, which is the sensible way to use both.
Who flies here
- OFD serves Baltrum, according to the regional tourism board, alongside Wangerooge, Langeoog and Norderney.
- FLN Frisia runs day trips from Norden-Norddeich, the mainland airfield directly opposite the islands.
The rules
- Reserve in advance. Every FLN flight requires a prior booking by phone or contact form.
- Be at the airfield at least 15 minutes before the agreed time. After that the seat can go to someone else.
- Check-in happens only together with handing over your baggage.
- 10 kg free per adult, 5 kg for children up to 11, no piece over 20 kg, and carriage subject to size, weight and available space.
On the island
- There are no cars. Everything moves on foot or by handcart, which is part of why people come.
- Bremen is the nearest international airport for onward connections.
