Hannover (HAJ): S5 to the Hauptbahnhof in 18 minutes
S-Bahn line S5 runs from a station directly under Terminal C to Hannover Hauptbahnhof in about 18 minutes. Bus 470 serves Langenhagen.
- S-Bahn line S5 is the airport train. Hannover Flughafen to Hannover Hauptbahnhof in about 18 minutes.
- The station is directly underneath Terminal C, with lifts and escalators straight up into the building.
- Terminals A and B are a few minutes' walk from the station, and baggage trolleys are kept next to it.
- Hannover Hauptbahnhof is the city's main station and a major ICE junction, so from the airport you are 18 minutes from long-distance trains to Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt and the Ruhr.
- Bus 470 runs between Langenhagen Zentrum and the airport. Its stop is between the Maritim Airport Hotel and car park 3, close to Terminal C.
- A taxi into central Hannover takes about 30 minutes depending on traffic, which is slower than the train.
- Taxi ranks are directly outside the terminal exits on the arrivals level.
The S-Bahn
- Line S5 connects Hannover Flughafen with Hannover Hauptbahnhof in about 18 minutes. It is the obvious way in and out.
- The station sits directly underneath Terminal C. Lifts and escalators take you straight up into the terminal, and trolleys are available right by the platform, which is not something every German airport station manages.
- Terminals A and B are a short walk from Terminal C along the concourse.
Why the Hauptbahnhof matters here
- Hannover Hauptbahnhof is one of Germany's main ICE junctions. Eighteen minutes from the airport puts you on direct trains to Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne and Munich.
- If Hannover is a connection rather than a destination, the S5 plus a long-distance train is often quicker than flying on.
The bus, and the taxi
- Bus 470 runs from Langenhagen Zentrum to the airport. The stop is between the Maritim Airport Hotel and car park 3, near Terminal C. This is a local connection, not a city-centre link.
- A taxi into central Hannover takes about 30 minutes in the airport's own estimate, against 18 by train. Unless you are going somewhere the S-Bahn does not, the train wins.
- Ranks are directly outside the arrivals-level exits.
The airport
- Hannover Airport is in Langenhagen, about 11 km north of the city.
- It has three passenger terminals, A, B and C, all connected on foot, plus a general aviation terminal.
- The airport runs flight simulators, tours and a viewing terrace as a visitor attraction in its own right, which is worth knowing if you are stuck with a long wait.
