Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) to the city and to Shuangliu

Metro Line 18 reaches Chengdu South Railway Station in as little as 37 minutes for CNY 10. Five airport bus lines run 24 hours a day every 30 minutes, and Line 19 joins Tianfu to Shuangliu airport in half an hour.

  • CNY 10 on the metro from Tianfu Airport North to Chengdu South Railway Station, direct on Line 18.
  • 37 minutes at fastest, with trains every 5 minutes 50 seconds to 11 minutes outside the peak.
  • 06:00 to 23:30 in both directions, so a late arrival is covered but a 1am one is not.
  • Five airport bus lines run 24 hours a day, every 30 minutes, to Chengdu East Railway Station and Chunxi Road, Jinsha bus hub, the Zoo, Global Center and Shuangliu airport.
  • They leave immediately when full rather than waiting for the clock, and take 50 to 100 minutes.
  • Board at level L1 of either terminal.
  • The two Chengdu airports are half an hour apart by metro, on Line 19, a 160 km/h line the provincial government calls the fastest urban rail transit line in China.
  • Day tickets: CNY 20 for one day, CNY 50 for three, CNY 70 for five, unlimited rides and unlimited distance.

The metro

  • Line 18 runs direct between Tianfu Airport North and Chengdu South Railway Station. No changes, no shuttle.
  • 37 minutes at its fastest, which for a 50 km airport run is quick.
  • CNY 10 for a single.
  • 06:00 to 23:30 in both directions, with off-peak intervals between 5 minutes 50 seconds and 11 minutes.
  • Day tickets exist and are generous: CNY 20 for one day, CNY 50 for three, CNY 70 for five, with no cap on rides, distance or duration. Two airport trips and any city travel makes the one-day ticket pay.

The buses, which never stop

  • Five airport bus lines, and all five run 24 hours a day, every 30 minutes.
  • Line 1 to Chengdu East Railway Station and Chunxi Road, about 80 minutes. Line 2 to Jinsha bus station, about 100 minutes. Line 3 to the Zoo, about 80 minutes. Line 4 to Global Center, about 50 minutes. Line 5 to Shuangliu International Airport.
  • They depart when full if that happens before the scheduled time, which in practice makes them more frequent than the timetable suggests.
  • Boarding is on level L1 at the side of Terminal 1 and the side of Terminal 2.
  • This is the answer to a flight landing at 2am, when the metro is closed.

Chengdu runs two airports as one

  • Shuangliu, the old airport, is still open and handles a large share of domestic flights.
  • Metro Line 19 joins the two in about half an hour, running at 160 km/h. The Sichuan provincial government describes it as the fastest urban rail transit line in China.
  • Airport bus line 5 does the same journey by road.
  • Check which airport your flight uses. International and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan services moved to Tianfu in March 2023, but domestic allocation is split between the two.

The railway underneath

  • A 350 km/h high speed railway runs beneath Tianfu Airport, which the provincial government calls the first of its kind in the world.
  • The station is Tianfujichang, and it connects the airport into the national high speed network rather than just the city.
  • If you are travelling on to another Sichuan city, this is usually better than flying, and it is under the terminal rather than a shuttle ride away.
