Guilin (KWL): the coach to Yangshuo leaves from the airport
Two express lines run into Guilin. Seven intercity coach lines leave the airport, including one to Yangshuo.
- Two city express bus lines run between the terminal and Guilin. The airport's ground transport department publishes the times by telephone, on 0773 2845355, rather than as a fixed printed timetable.
- Seven intercity coach lines leave the airport: Liuzhou, Hechi, Yizhou, Yangshuo, Lipu, Sanjiang and Rongshui.
- The Yangshuo coach is the one most visitors want. Yangshuo, not Guilin, is where most people actually stay for the karst scenery and the Li River.
- Taking it means you never enter Guilin city, which saves a change and an hour.
- Sanjiang is the route to the Dong villages and the wind and rain bridges, in northern Guangxi.
- Longsheng and the Longji rice terraces are usually reached from Guilin city rather than direct from the airport.
- The airport is about 28 km west of Guilin, so this is a proper drive, not a hop.
The coaches are the useful part
- Guilin Liangjiang runs seven intercity coach lines from the terminal, to Liuzhou, Hechi, Yizhou, Yangshuo, Lipu, Sanjiang and Rongshui.
- The Yangshuo one changes the trip. Most visitors to this part of China are heading for Yangshuo, an hour and a half south, for the karst peaks and the Li River, and Guilin city is only a waypoint. The direct coach means you skip it.
- Sanjiang is the jumping-off point for the Dong minority villages and the covered wind and rain bridges of northern Guangxi.
Getting into Guilin itself
- Two city express lines run between the airport and Guilin.
- The airport does not publish a fixed timetable for them. Its own transport page gives the ground transport department's number, 0773 2845355, and says to call for details. That is unusual and worth knowing before you plan a tight connection.
- The distance is about 28 km, west of the city.
Practical
- Buy coach tickets at the airport counters rather than assuming you can pay on board.
- The Longji rice terraces at Longsheng are not on the airport coach list; the usual route is into Guilin and out again from the bus station.
The airport
- Guilin Liangjiang is Guangxi's main international gateway, with regional flights across Southeast Asia alongside a dense domestic network.
- Guilin also has a high-speed railway station in the city, on the line between Guiyang and Guangzhou, which is often faster than flying for destinations in southern China.
- The scenery starts on the approach. The karst peaks are visible from the air on a clear day, which is worth a window seat.
