Xi'an Xianyang (XIY) on Metro Line 14, and the terminal that decides your stop
Line 14 ends at Airport West for Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and calls at Airport for Terminal 5 one stop earlier. It runs through Xi'an North Railway Station.
- Metro Line 14 serves the airport with two stations, and they are not interchangeable.
- Airport West (T1, T2, T3) is the terminus, and serves Terminals 1, 2 and 3.
- Airport (T5) is the stop before it, and serves Terminal 5.
- Check your terminal before you choose a train, because getting off one stop early or late means a walk between terminals.
- Line 14 calls at Xi'an North Railway Station, the high speed rail hub, so the airport connects to the national network without changing lines.
- The line runs on to Heshao by way of Konggang New City, the Art Centre, Baiqizhai, Changling, Qinhan New City, Qingong, Weihe South, Wenjingshan Park, Xi'an Polytechnic, Beichen, the Olympic Sports Centre, Shuangzhai, Xinsi and Gangwu Avenue.
- The airport is in Xianyang, not Xi'an. The two cities run together and the metro is what stitches them.
One line, two airport stations
- Xi'an Metro Line 14 ends at the airport, and it does so twice: the terminus is Airport West (T1, T2, T3), and the stop immediately before it is Airport (T5).
- Which one you want depends entirely on your terminal. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are at Airport West. Terminal 5 has its own station.
- This is the mistake to avoid. Airport stations are usually singular, so the instinct is to ride to the end of the line. If you are flying from Terminal 5, the end of the line is one stop too far.
- Check the terminal on your booking, not on your memory of a previous trip. Terminal 5 is the newest and a lot of traffic has moved into it.
Where the line goes
- Line 14 runs from the airport to Heshao, calling at Airport (T5), Konggang New City, the Art Centre, Baiqizhai, Changling, Qinhan New City, Qingong, Weihe South, Xi'an North Railway Station, Wenjingshan Park, Xi'an Polytechnic Wude Road, Beichen, the Olympic Sports Centre, Shuangzhai, Xinsi and Gangwu Avenue.
- Xi'an North Railway Station is the one that matters most. It is the high speed rail hub, and from the airport it is a single ride with no change.
- For the walled city and the Bell Tower, you change at Xi'an North onto the rest of the network.
Two cities, one airport
- The airport is in Xianyang, not in Xi'an. They are separate cities that have grown into each other, and the airport sits between them.
- That distance is real. The airport is about 40 km from the centre of Xi'an, which is why the metro line is long and why it was built as an airport line before it was a city line.
- The Terracotta Army is on the other side of Xi'an entirely, east of the city, so if that is the plan, budget the crossing.
