Getting from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport to the city

There is no airport bus in the ordinary sense

• MAX Transit runs fixed routes, the Magic City Connector and the Birmingham Xpress bus rapid transit, and none of them calls at the terminal. The operator's own published timetable data contains no airport stop at all; the nearest fixed route stops are about 1.8 km away on routes 22 and 25, and the nearest Birmingham Xpress stops about 1.9 km away on 1st Avenue North.
• Birmingham Xpress is currently free, courtesy of the City of Birmingham, which makes it tempting. It still does not go to the airport.

What does go there is a booked van

• MAX On-Demand is the airport connection. It is a shared, corner to corner service you request, not a route you wait at a stop for.
• 1.50 USD per adult, and 0.75 USD for each accompanying passenger, up to two. Book on the MAX Connect app or by telephone on 205-521-0101.
• It operates Monday to Saturday, 05:00 to 21:00. There is no Sunday service. An evening arrival after nine, or any Sunday arrival, has no public option.
• Start from MAX Central Station at 1601 Morris Avenue, where parking is free and monitored 24 hours, or from any corner inside the East Side zone.
• Going out, the van drops you at your departure gate. Coming back, it collects you at the MAX Transit stand outside baggage claim on the ground floor.
• Vehicles are shared. Bring no more than two pieces of luggage, and expect to load and unload them yourself; the drivers do not handle bags.

The airport does not tell you any of this

• Birmingham Airport Authority's parking and ground transportation page lists rental cars, taxis, limousine and shuttle by reservation, rideshare and Turo, and no bus. Nothing on it points at MAX. If you only read the airport site you would conclude there is no public transport, which is nearly but not quite true.

Cars, and what the kerbs cost

• Taxi service is available 24/7, from the ground level just outside baggage claim. Cabs are independently owned and operated, so agree the basis of the fare before setting off.
• Uber and Lyft are authorised to pick up at the Arrivals lower level kerbside. Turo may hand over in the Economy Lot or the parking deck, or in person kerbside.
• Parking is 2.00 USD an hour across the board, with daily maximums of 26 USD hourly, 17 USD daily, 10 USD economy and 28 USD valet, or 18 USD for a partial day. Hourly parking is meant for stays under four hours and sits on level 3 of the deck; daily is level 2 and levels 4 to 7. These rates took effect on 1 July 2025 and were the first change since 2008.
• The Cell Phone Lot at 5600 Airline Drive is free with no time limit, holds about 40 vehicles, and requires drivers to stay with their cars.
