Miami Airport (MIA) to the city and Miami Beach
Metrorail, Tri-Rail and the buses all start at the Miami Intermodal Center, not in the terminal. The free MIA Mover takes you there, and the fare is $2.25 with the day capped at $5.65.
- No train leaves from the terminal. Metrorail, Metrobus and Tri-Rail all go from the Miami Intermodal Center / Miami International Airport Station.
- The MIA Mover is free and is how you get there. Access is on the 3rd level between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages.
- Metrorail and local Metrobus are $2.25, and the day is capped at $5.65 however many rides you take.
- Buy at the Intermodal Center, not in the terminal. That is where the EASY Card machines are.
- For Miami Beach, take the bus, not the train. A service runs every 30 minutes, 6 a.m. to 11.40 p.m., seven days a week, from the airport Metrorail station to 41st Street and on to South Pointe Drive.
- The Orange Line is the one for downtown, calling at Brickell, Government Center, Civic Center, Coconut Grove, South Miami and Dadeland North.
- Tri-Rail runs from the same building to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.
- Metromover, once you are downtown, is free.
The building you actually want
- Miami puts all its public transport in one place, and that place is not the terminal. The Miami Intermodal Center, also signed as Miami International Airport Station, holds Metrorail, Metrobus, Tri-Rail, the Rental Car Center and the city trolley.
- You reach it on the MIA Mover, which is free. Access is on the 3rd level, between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages, and it is signposted from the terminals.
- The ticket machines are over there too. EASY Card vending machines are in the Intermodal Center, so do not spend time hunting for one at the gate.
The fares
- Metrorail is $2.25, and so is a local Metrobus.
- Inter-County Express buses are $2.65.
- A 1-Day Pass is $5.65, and the system caps a day's charges at that figure automatically when you pay with stored value on an EASY Card or with a contactless bank card. You do not have to decide in advance.
- Metromover, the free downtown loop, costs nothing at all and is how you move around the centre once Metrorail has dropped you.
Downtown
- Take an Orange Line train. It calls at Earlington Heights, Allapattah, Santa Clara, Civic Center, Culmer, Historic Overtown/Lyric Theatre, Government Center, Brickell, Vizcaya, Coconut Grove, Douglas Road, University, South Miami and Dadeland North.
- Government Center and Brickell are the two useful downtown stops, and both connect to Metromover.
- Change at Historic Overtown/Lyric Theatre for Brightline, the fast train up the coast.
Miami Beach
- This is the trip most arrivals actually want, and the train does not do it. A bus runs directly between the airport Metrorail station and Miami Beach, every 30 minutes, 6 a.m. to 11.40 p.m., seven days a week, covering 41st Street down to South Pointe Drive.
- It still starts at the Intermodal Center, so the MIA Mover ride comes first either way.
- After 11.40 p.m. there is no direct service, which is worth knowing before you book a late arrival into a South Beach hotel.
Going further
- Tri-Rail leaves from the same building and links Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Follow the signs on the 3rd level for the MIA Mover to Miami Central Station.
- The City of Miami Trolley is also a short MIA Mover ride away, at Miami Central Station.
