San Jose (SJC): VTA Route 60, the free Airport Flyer
Route 60 costs nothing from either terminal and connects to BART at Milpitas, Caltrain at Santa Clara and light rail at Metro/Airport.
- VTA Route 60, the Airport Flyer, is free to ride in either direction from SJC.
- Terminal A: stop 7. Terminal B: stop 5.
- It runs between Milpitas BART station and Winchester station, passing the airport.
- For BART: Route 60 to Milpitas BART. One bus, no fare.
- For Caltrain or ACE: Route 60 towards Winchester, get off at Santa Clara Transit Center.
- For downtown San Jose: Route 60 to Metro/Airport station, then the VTA Blue or Green light rail. 25 to 35 minutes. Light rail costs money; the 60 does not.
- For Amtrak or Greyhound at Diridon: Route 60 to Metro/Airport, then the Green Line southbound.
- For Levi's Stadium: Route 60 to Metro/Airport, Green Line to Great America. 45 to 60 minutes.
- For PayPal Park: Route 60 direct to Coleman Ave & Earthquakes Way, right outside. 20 to 30 minutes.
A free bus that does everything
- VTA Route 60 is branded the Airport Flyer, and it costs nothing to ride from SJC in either direction. That is unusual enough to be the headline.
- Terminal A: stop 7. Terminal B: stop 5.
- The route runs between Milpitas BART station and Winchester station, with the airport in the middle, so the direction you board decides which connections you get.
Where it takes you
- BART: ride Route 60 to Milpitas BART. That puts you on the network that reaches Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco.
- Caltrain and ACE: ride Route 60 towards Winchester and get off at Santa Clara Transit Center. Caltrain runs up the peninsula to San Francisco; ACE runs east to Stockton.
- Downtown San Jose: Route 60 to Metro/Airport station, then the VTA Blue or Green light rail into the centre. Saint James and Convention Center are the useful stops. 25 to 35 minutes in total.
- Diridon station for Amtrak, Greyhound and the SAP Center: Route 60 to Metro/Airport, then the Green Line southbound. Alternatively Route 60 to Santa Clara Transit Center and change to bus 22 or a train. 30 to 40 minutes.
- Levi's Stadium: Route 60 towards Milpitas BART, Green Line from Metro/Airport to Great America, which is next to the stadium. 45 to 60 minutes.
- PayPal Park: Route 60 direct to Coleman Ave & Earthquakes Way, which is in front of the ground. 20 to 30 minutes.
The one thing to remember
- The bus is free. The light rail is not. Once you leave Route 60 for a VTA train, the fare applies.
- There is no rail station at the airport itself, which is why the free bus exists.
Getting your bearings
- SJC is about 5 km from downtown San Jose, right in the middle of Silicon Valley, and much closer to the city than SFO is to San Francisco.
- San Francisco is 70 km north. SFO and OAK are the other two Bay Area airports and all three are worth checking on a fare search.
- There are bike racks and lockers at both terminals, and pedestrian access is via Airport Parkway and the crossings on Airport Boulevard. There is deliberately no walking or cycling route via Skyport Drive.
