Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to the Tri-Rail, and the one city bus
The free Tri-Rail shuttle serves all four terminals every 15 to 20 minutes. BCT Route 1 leaves from the Rental Car Center, not the terminal kerb.
- A complimentary shuttle bus links all four terminals with the Fort Lauderdale Airport Tri-Rail station at Dania Beach.
- It runs during train operating hours, roughly every 15 to 20 minutes, and picks up on the lower level.
- Tri-Rail runs north to West Palm Beach and south to MiamiCentral and Miami Airport. From this station it is the practical way into either city without a car.
- Ticket vending machines are on both platforms and take cash, debit and credit.
- Broward County Transit routes 4, 6, 15 and 16 also call at the Tri-Rail station.
- BCT Route 1 is the direct city bus, and its stop is at the Rental Car Center bus-way on the departure upper level.
- From Terminals 2, 3 or 4 take the airport shuttle to the Rental Car Center, then turn right and walk to the end of the building.
- From Terminal 1 take the moving walkway into the Rental Car Center, go to Level 3 and out to the kerb.
The free shuttle to the train
- Tri-Rail's Fort Lauderdale Airport station is at Dania Beach, about a mile and a half from the terminals, and a complimentary shuttle bus connects the two.
- It serves all four terminals, picking up on the lower level at designated stops, and runs during train operating hours roughly every 15 to 20 minutes.
- The shuttle is free to Tri-Rail passengers, which in practice means anyone heading for the train.
- Both platforms have ticket vending machines taking cash, debit and credit, and a staffed Ticket Kiosk on Track 1 is open weekdays 08:00 to 16:00.
Where Tri-Rail goes
- North: Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, Cypress Creek, Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth Beach, West Palm Beach, Mangonia Park.
- South: Golden Glades, Opa-locka, the Metrorail Transfer, Hialeah Market, Miami Airport and MiamiCentral.
- That last one matters. From this airport you can reach central Miami and Miami International on one train, which is the cheap way to do a journey that otherwise costs a lot in a car.
The city bus
- Broward County Transit Route 1 serves the airport directly, seven days a week including holidays.
- Its stop is not on the terminal kerb. It is at the Rental Car Center bus-way, on the departure upper level.
- From Terminals 2, 3 or 4: take the airport shuttle bus to the Rental Car Center, and when you get off turn right and walk to the end of the building.
- From Terminal 1: take the moving walkway into the Rental Car Center, go up to Level 3, then outside to the kerb.
- Routes 4, 6, 15 and 16 call at the Tri-Rail station rather than the terminals, so they are a second leg rather than a first one.
Practical notes
- Four terminals, and they are a walk apart. The pedestrian crossings between them are marked but the airport shuttle exists for a reason.
- This is the Caribbean cruise airport. Port Everglades is minutes away, which is why the terminals empty and fill in waves.
- Miami International is 40 km south and the two airports are not interchangeable on the day, whatever the fare comparison says.
